The thing about the USA is that there are SO many good universities, both large national unis (that also dominate the Times and ARWU world university rankings lists) and smaller liberal arts schools. I'm sure the first unis people in the UK think about are Harvard, Yale + other Ivy League unis and Stanford, but there are many many other top notch institutions. Here is a sampling:

private: Carnegie Mellon, U of Washington-St. Louis, Northwestern, U Chicago, Vanderbilt, Rice, Emory, USC, Duke, Tulane, Tufts, NYU

public: U Michigan, U Wisconsin, U Illinois, U Cal-Berkeley, UCLA, U Virginia, U Texas, U North Carolina, U Washington, Georgia Tech, William and Mary

liberal arts: Claremont Mckenna, Oberlin, Swarthmore, Amherst, Williams, Colby, Middlebry, Bowdoin, Wellesly

and these are just some of the best- there are numerous other high quality US unis that also have resources/funding that blows away UK and European unis.
