Hey there i have an offer from Hild Bede, but having applied for Cuthberts i dont really know much about it! Does anyone have pictures of the rooms and stuff and can anyone tell me what the facilites are like...gym etc????

I have also heard that it is possible for me to change colleges, would anyone advise me to try changing it back to Cuthberts?

thanks alot!

All the rooms are different so sending you a photo would be pointless. The gym is very much weight-lifting orientated, I'm afraid. It's a sore point with me. We have 2 chapels (though only one of them is in use - it's a massive art deco one) and arguably the best chapel choir of all the colleges. Our catering is meant to be the best (or nearly the best) as well. Our bar is really nice but people from other colleges often don't bother going there as they believe it to be out of the way - however, when ents etc are on, the bar is packed anyway because HB has a lot of students. At the moment they're trying to turn it into a coffee shop/chill out area - we just got wireless internet there and soon I think we'll have a coffee machine. We have a massive hall with a proper stage that can be used for balls and drama productions, and our balls are meant to be some of the best (our Summer ball has a £40,000 budget and an amazing band are playing, not that I'm allowed to say what it is yet!).

Otherwise it's the usual blurb about library, computer rooms, study rooms, having 2 gymnasia, etc etc. I think Cuth's is probably the most like HB out of all of the other colleges (from what I know), being a mix of nice traditions and modernity. It really depends what you're looking for - if you really, really want to be self-catered, you might prefer Cuth's. From what I gather it's pretty nice there. But everyone I know here - including people who have been pooled from other colleges - loves it. Could you visit at all? Do a search on this forum for "Jelkin Hild Bede" and you might find some threads where I've ranted about how great HB is in more detail.

It's no problem!

May I simply add that it's a beautiful College and has amazing facilities! You may think it's far away from the centre, but Durham is not very big and everything is walking distance. I would have been very happy if I was assigned that College!

I think they're thinking of getting a treadmill in but in general the people running it this year have been totally crap. You could always bring it up in an SRC meeting (Student Representative Council meeting - you can ask to spend money on new things for college, and people vote on it. In short.) I'm not sure how great other college gyms are either, to be honest. There's a gym at Maiden Castle (a Durham sports centre) but I have a feeling it's quite pricey.

Student accomodation is only in flats when it's self-catered, I think. Here it's arranged a bit like a hotel, as in, you have corridors with rooms down them. I don't think I'd like a flat situation as much because it really limits your socialising! I know and hang out with most people on my floor and on the floor below (15 people per floor). Where I live there are 4 loos and 2 showers per floor, but this place was built in the 60s and is being closed next year for refurbishment, so I'm not sure it's the best example. I don't often find sharing facilities an issue and it's quite rare that I have to wait for a shower.

Fraid I don't know where the anthropology dept is. To be honest it's more important where you'll be having lectures. Either way, HB isn't really far from anywhere. I can't really tell you if it's worth the change as I've never experienced Cuth's, but I really love Hild Bede.

I'm kind of worried we have given you too high expectations now. Try not to think too highly of it before you see it. Obviously HB has its faults - I just love it to bits anyway.
Anthropology dept. is on Old Elvet, not far from Hild Bede at all...10 minutes?

Most lectures are at Elvet Riverside,again,10 minutes walk from Hild Bede?

Hild Bede seems nice, but verrrryyyyy big...

I was thinking of that too lol. Oh well.

haha! dont worry, i will approach HB with an open mind...i know that there will be bad things about everything....i just hope i will learn to love it as you guys have....=D

You will. It's a beautiful College and unlike many other places, there is less chance of you sharing a room. When I visited HB simply looking at the grounds stunned me. The only reason I picked Hatfield was that I prefer smaller communities and actually want to share a room for a term. Castle was my first choice and Hatfield second. HB would definitely have been somewhere I would have not minded to go .

You can actually request to share a room if that's what you want  I know a few people who did.

i dont mind sharing, but i think i wold prefer my own room=)

the only thing that i wish HB had was that really nice dining hall that the castle has! thats amazing. But the formal pictures look quite nice. Do most people go for formals?

I still havent replied to my offer yet, i am trying to choose beteen durham and ucl....i am swaying more towards durham but cant seem to make that final reply! hahaha oh wellss i will have to soon enough

Ah, I had the same choice to make. Chose Durham and have never regretted it. They are completely different though so you have to decide what kind of uni experience you want!

I know what you mean about the dining hall thing. What I do like about HB's dining hall is it has circular tables. Formals are really popular, and usually some people have to be turned down - they always get priority for the next one though.

Oh, and you are very, very likely to get your own room

well thought it over last night, and finally came to my decision....and DURHAM it is=) the choice felt good and so i think (or rather hope) it is the right one for me.
