Is it worth me applying for...

Hi,

First post lol.

I am looking to get my Ucas application done this week. I have applied to top universities such as Bristol, Southampton and Sheffield along with Birmingham and Aston. I don't think I will get the grades to go to Bristol it's a long shot but I really want to go to Southampton.

My grades on the otherhand aren't too good. I want to do computer science and have applied at both Southampton and Sheffield to do a Foundation year aswell. My AS grades were ABE. AB being for Applied ICT double award and E for Business. Southampton's Entry requirements are BBB.

Will I be considered and how likely is it that i get a conditional place if I get the grades. I know I will get AA in Double ICT as that's like my specialist subject. I am retaking AS Business and know I will get higher this time, the reason why I got so low before was because I didn't finish I'm a slow writer (probably due to the amount of time i spend typing) and didn't get to finish all 5 q's before the time went, infact on 2 papers i only finished 3 questions. I have been working on my writing speed and practicing papers and I am confident I will get at least a C this time. Ideally I will finish with AAC or AAB with a B in AS Maths which I am doing this year (only AS which is why I need to do foundation year).

Is it worth me going for higher universities as I know I can get the grades? Or wont they even consider me and therefore, should I be looking at unis with lower entry requirements such as Aston who ask for BBC?
What have your teachers predicted you? If you're predicted BBB, Southampton are likely to consider you.

Yes go for it, if your totally confident in getting the grades then go forth. It also depends if they go by the points system or not. I know some unis want ABB and will accept AAC based on the points system.

Apparently in my college predicted grades will be your AS grade plus 1 grade so for Applied ICT Double award I will be predicted AA and for Business a D unless I can convince my Business Tutor to put it down as a C. But then that would be AA C/D not BBB
That still should be fine. If you used the UCAS tariff AAC would be higher than BBB anyway.

Is this the same with the majority of colleges?

I think so yes, Most of my close mates go to different colleges in Birmingham and Solihull and their system is the same. Although I suppose if you talk to the tutor you might get higher, especially if you are doing retakes.
It's the same system in my college too, your prediction is one more than you got at AS.

OP, if you're confident that you can achieve those grades, and can get your teacher to predict a C not a D, then I think you should go for it! If you're really worried, you could email the admissions office at the universities to see if they'd accept AAC instead of BBB.
