Hello
Finally I get a place in pharmacy in UoH , I need some information regarding placement . In the first year how many days is per week and where are they ? How can I travel to the placement ? Can I apply travel grant from student finance ?
Many thanks
Sami

First years will go to 4 different one day placements spread throughout the year, which could be anywhere within a reasonable distance from UoH which can include a hospital, some will be obviously be closer than others. Students are randomly assigned a placement, which they will tell you after a month or two of the start of the year, so you won’t be able to choose where you want to go. You’ll also have to make your own way to said placements whether that be a car, bus or train. You won’t get any reimbursement from the university for travel but I’m not sure about student finance though I doubt it.

Hi, I'd just like to know how the pharmacy timetable looks like as I want to know what I will be taking on, like how much free-time you get a day and what a week consists of?

Thank you

That’s quite a hard question to answer as timetables tend to change every year. Pharmacy wise we have quite a lot of contact time meaning you’ll be in university quite a lot. Generally most of the year you’ll be in 5 days a week which includes lectures, tutorials and practical. Each day may not be full, you might only have one thing one day but another day you could have 3 lectures so it really varies. If you would like to know what kind of things you’ll be doing it best to have look at the modules from the university website which gives you a bit of idea what to expect.
thanks for your reply
Do you know the placements are in the morning ?if so what do they start usually and how long does it take ?
I have 3 childeren and I have to plan early
Many thanks

Once you know which placements you got you will have to contact them each individually on your own about a week before you go. You’ll have to ask what time they want you there etc. How long you work is solely dependant on your placement host but I think the university says to expect it to be a full day i.e. from 9-5. I had somes which started at 10 and finished early but some I finished about 5 so it’s very much for the placement host to decide but they usually tell you to start at 9 or 10am.
Hi; do you know if the university will allow applicants that have resit their exams? I’m looking to resist my exams this year and will try applying for pharmacy via clearing after I get my results. Do they accept resits?

Honestly I’m not sure about that, it would be better for you to contact the university itself and ask about it.

Hi @maddy2181

The best thing to do would be to give our Student Recruitment team a call, they will be able to go through your resits and confirm if there are places for certain courses. The number is: 01484 472625, and they are available Monday to Thursday 9.00am - 5.00pm, Friday 9.00am - 4.00pm.
I hope this helps.

Thanks,
Harriette
Hi there , I know it has been quite some time since this thread has been started but I have a couple of questions to ask you : in terms of placements what is furthest you expect to travel and are they a majority of community, hospital, industry placement ? From your experience do the placement tend to be local , in the city centre ? What would you say is the difficulty in first year about the course ? Is Huddersfield safe as you hear and read the high crime rates specially in the outer city ?

So in the first year you will have four 1 day placements which generally consists of 3 community and 1 hospital pharmacy. From my knowledge there won’t be any industry placements available. Placements are randomly assigned to students in 1st and 2nd year so it’s hard to say where you will be on your placement so you should be prepared to travel as most won’t be in Huddersfield. The placements will be close enough that you can commute from Huddersfield some obviously farther than others some places include; Wakefield, Barnsley, Doncaster, Rotherham, Sheffield, Bingley, Leed, Manchester etc. I would say the most challenging part of 1st year is how different it is from college especially how you are assessed and taught, which is a definite learning curve. But don’t worry too much as 1st year generally is to prepare you for the next 3 years.

Huddersfield doesn’t really have a good reputation at the moment in the media for public safety but I’ve been living there for the past 3 years and I never had any problems. If you are living in Huddersfield most halls (except from Storthes and Asenhurst ) will be near the university and the city centre anyway so I don’t think you should be worried.

Thank you very much , I was wondering what happens if u miss the placements ? In terms of assessment how is it from first year compared as you go up the years ? From your experience how do pre-reg works like at what point would you apply for them and how do you it ? i’ve Got a lot of questions but it’s good to hear your advice xD

Well the placements are compulsory so you do have to go and there will be assignments based on what you there and also task to complete. If you don’t go but have a genuine reason why then it shouldn’t be a problem but you would need to notify our tutor and the placement host.

First years assignments aren’t really too hard but it’s just different from what you’re used to in college so there’s a bit of difficulty especially mark scheme wise. There’s a lot more content in 2nd year which I found some parts difficult and the volume of work really tests your time management skills. I just finished 3rd year which in my opinion wasn’t as content heavy but more difficult to get your head around. You will also be doing your dissertation in the 3rd year.

At this point don’t worry about pre-reg, you will start applying for at the end of 3rd year and the university will tell you all about it.

If you have any more questions I will try my best to answer them you can inbox me if you prefer to. What level of study are you at the moment?
I’m going to Huddersfield for MPharm this year ( in 2 weeks xD ) so that’s why I’m over curious . So in years 3 and 4 you get to choose placements ? and how is your social circle like do you have enough time ? Has it changed since first year ? I hear there is a high drop rate for the course ?

So in year 3 and 4 you can either arrange your own placement or email the tutor in charge a preference of where you want to do your placement and a reason why but it can’t be just because of distance.

Social wise if you’re living in Huddersfield rather than commuting you will have more than enough time socialising with friends chilling out etc. It’s all about managing your time wisely first year obviously put the work in but it’s also important to enjoy yourself. My social circle have only gone bigger throughout the 3 years I know more or less everybody in my year and I can talk to any of them. Try and make friends on your first day everybody is in the same boat as you so don’t be nervous. I would recommend going to events organised by the Huddersfield Pharmacy Society there will be students from other years as well.

From what I heard but don’t quote me the drop rate has gone up since when I was in first year I don’t think it’s because of the teaching or anything like that. It’s really down with the individual honestly if you put in the work you should be able to pass. There will always be people that are not right for the course and it’s better they know that earlier on than later. Obviously the content does get more difficult as you move up years but it just something you have to deal with, there are support in place if you’re struggling.
I will be going for pharmacy interview next month in Huddersfield university, Please what kind of interview am I to expect? Thanks
