Can I get a job without GBC?

Hi everyone!

I’m very confused about what degree to go for. I’ve gotten a few offers for the MSc Clinical Psychology- which is non BPS accredited and a few for the MSc Psychology Conversion- which is BPS accredited. My degree seems to not cover 50% of psychology content which is why i was rejected from some universities for the clinical psychology degree but I have received offers from other unis for the same course so I don’t really understand what basis or criteria they evaluate applicants upon.

I wanted to know if there is any scope of getting jobs in this field (psychology) without GBC. I know I won’t be able to work with the NHS since having GBC is an essential requirement candidates need to have but is there any scope for getting good paying jobs in the private sector without it? Should I simply go for the conversion course right now or pursue a more specialised degree right now and then go for the conversion course after saving money while working in the UK?

Hello!:hello:

To be able to practice psychology you will need to have an accreditation from the BPS. If your undergrad degree was BPS accredited then you can go for a non-accredited masters if you wish. If your undergrad was not accredited then you would need to do an accredited masters conversion course. For jobs such as assistant psychologist, psychological wellbeing practitioner and clinical psychologists you will need GBC. If you wish to work within psychology in roles such as a support worker, recovery worker or helpline worker you don't need accreditation. It depends which route you would like to go down. You don't need a specialized masters for most psychology roles. Most psychology roles do not require a MSc. To become a Health or Forensic psychologist then you would need to complete a MSc in this area that is accredited by the BPS, but you must already have accreditation to pursue these masters.

I hope this helps! Please fell free to ask anymore questions and I will help where possible!
