The Student Room Group

Have you been impacted by fake exam paper scams?

Although the vast majority of interactions across TSR and social platforms are supportive, there are a small group of people who look to profit from the anxiety and panic that students face as they head into their exams.

Some of you may have seen in previous years users on TikTok, Instagram, Discord and even TSR offer new, untaken exam papers in exchange for cash. These accounts promise ‘early access’ to exam papers in exchange for cash, but in reality the ‘exam papers’ they promised turned out to be fake. This is a huge problem for students and exam boards, and sadly has increased over the last few years - with more of these accounts being created than ever before.

We are working with the BBC to help warn as many students as possible of these scams as we head into the 2023 exam season, and also to ensure that students like yourselves aren’t being taken advantage of.

Have you or anyone you know ever had experience with these scammers? Have you DM’d or messaged the accounts on social media that say they have access to ‘leaked’ GCSE / A level exam papers?

We have opened up a space below to post anonymously if you would like to share your experiences or would just like to chat about the industry of fake exam papers and the students that fall victims to these scams each year.  The BBC is also looking to put together an in depth case study to make sure students are aware of the risks, and would love to speak to anyone that has first hand experience of these scams.

You can stay anonymous if you’d prefer plus, you can chat to their reporter ‘off-the-record’ if you’d simply like to find out more about the story before deciding whether you want to take part. If you’d like to get in touch, please email [email protected], who is the journalist working on this story. You can also tweet him @kristianj23.

If you would like more details, you can also drop me a direct message using our PM function. As we’ve stated, anonymity is guaranteed.

the small group of people profiting from anxiety will probably lead to a much bigger group of people profiting of anxiety once the article is published

Personally I believe that these people can profit in this space because we don't openly speak about it and therefore students are never 100% certain that these offers are not real and therefore decide to take the risk. Understandably students who have potentially fallen for these scams are very unlikely to come out and speak about it in the past and we hope by sharing real experiences we can help support students in not potentially falling for these scams.

That's the thinking of our work!
