Public transport to/around Colchester campus

Only just added Essex to the list of possible unis of interest, never been (yet) but it looks lovely and has some really interesting courses

Just wondering, what the bus service to/from Colchester campus is like?

Is it worth going in to Colchester, is there much there?
Is Hythe worth a look?
How easy is in to get to London for the day?

Hello @ChiefBrody!

It is great that you are considering Essex as an option and that you enjoy our courses! 😁

When it comes to public transport there is loads around the university and Colchester - Greater Anglia provides frequent trains from London Liverpool Street to Colchester (also known as Colchester North). London Liverpool Street has a direct link to Stansted Airport as well as Underground and bus services for travel from and to Gatwick and Heathrow Airports. The train journey from Liverpool Street takes just under an hour and you can get a bus or taxi from the station to us. Our nearest station is Hythe (Essex) which is a 20-minute walk from campus, train services to this station are less frequent. 🚅🛫

There are frequent buses that pass through campus that take you into the centre of town, these buses normally are the S1 or the 87 and come around every 10 minutes (varying at the time of day). The First Bus website can help you plan your route: https://www.firstbus.co.uk/. However, the walk to central town from central campus will properly take around 30 minutes 🚶*♂️. There are lots of shops, cinemas, restaurant's and takeaways, bars and even a zoo. The city hosts lots of events, so its great to keep an eye open for these, and what interest you the best: https://www.visitcolchester.com/whats-on

If you are interested in coming to visit us, check out our open days here: https://www.essex.ac.uk/visit-us/open-days. Our next Colchester Open Day is our Clearing Open Day on Saturday 19 August and our Southend Clearing Open Day is on Tuesday 22 August. After this, our Open Days are on Saturday 16 September and Saturday 28 October in Colchester, and on Saturday 14 October in Southend. 🎓😁🎈
