York accommodation help

I am most likely going to firm york and im waiting for the accommodation to be open for application. but the problem is i rlly dont know which one to choose.

I will be doing maths at York, so ill be studying on west campus. and so that makes me thing James college would be the best option since its closest and idk i feel like there's more going on in west.

On the other hand, the accommodation looks much nicer on east. the problem is it doesn't look as busy and stuff. and it might be a pain having to go to and from west to east.

any ideas on what i should do? xd

I'd recommend applying for a college on the same campus as your department because personally I knew there was a lesser chance of me going to my classes if I had to wake up earlier to walk or get the bus to a different campus. Also, for me the rooms on East were just ridiculously expensive and I'd rather have the money to go out with my friends. It really depends on what you want from a college, such as playing a sport, wanting more of a chill or party vibe. I'd recommend having a look at this article by The Tab: https://thetab.com/uk/york/2023/09/18/your-complete-and-essential-guide-to-uni-of-yorks-11-colleges-32170 that kind of summarises the stereotypes of each college.

Hi!

James College is nice and you're right - it's close to the Maths Department so I think that would be a good choice if you want to get to your lectures quickly! You do have the option of taking the shuttle bus between campuses or cycling/walking so I'd still have a look at Campus East. It really depends what is important to you - if you think you'll spend a lot of time in your room then it's important that you are based somewhere that you really like! However, if you think you'll be out and about at classes/studying and socialising at societies/student bars etc. then it doesn't matter as much what the room looks like. I was in one of the more affordable rooms and I made it look pretty nice with posters/pictures and decorations.

You’ll be in the Church Lane Building which is right next to Alcuin but also close to Derwent and Halifax
I think for first year you want to be on the West Campus. Everything you’ll ever need is in West Campus and it’s much closer to the city centre too. A lot of maths students stay in James college along with physics and engineering students too. It’s a very STEM based college so you’ll have no shortage of study buddies. I think one thing you’ll find though is that your lectures in first year will probably not be in the maths department so in terms of location James college is not actually closer to your lecture halls than any other West Campus college. If I was you I would recommend going to a college near the library as that is easily the most important building for undergrads, if I could sleep in the library I would! So maybe consider Vanbrugh or even Alcuin college.
