About Choosing A level subjects

Hey, i'm in year 11 now, and my school teachers have been bangin on about what you want to do after school.

I want to go 6th form, and then to University for 3 years (Degree).

When I'm older, I want to do a Computing, ICT and Business IT job.

I'm not bright in English, therefore I wouldn't like to do anything after year 11.
I would like to know which 4 AS subject would you take, if you was in my position.

I'm definitely taking GCE ICT and GCE Maths.
The other subjects I may choose are:
Physics
Business and Economies
Psychology
Further Maths (can someone tell me how much harder it is than normal A level maths)

My best mate does further maths. Apparantly, cos she's doing maths at uni, the 1st year at uni is what she's studying now at A2.
I've seen her work, it looks difficult. I wouldn't like to do it.
She enjoys it though. If you are math-sy way out then go for it!
Am also doing business, economics and psychology. So u can ask me about those if you like
Oh and I took physics at AS... wow you're sounding like a mini me!

woo someone from bradford:biggrin:
personally i think you shouldn't bother with futher maths...but all of them subjects look fine choose something you think you might enjoy
Do not take ICT, most of the top universities don't recommend it at all.

Try doing Maths, Further Maths, Physics, Economics.

I have seen some thing in Imperial Uni, they do ICT. I want to do an ICT job in later life. However, they want grades like AAA which i think is very hard.

the reason why I don't think you should bother with futher maths, and three As is achievable if you put in the effort

so is any1 doing further maths and maths, i wanna know how much times harder.

Also, in 6th form, I may think of doing GCE Applied ICT along with normal GCE ICT. I know that Applied ICT is easier, however, I do not want to do the things they cover in Applied ICT.
Has any1 done this?

Shouldn't you be in school, ehh ?! :p:

yeahh I'm wondering the same thing about further maths....although I'm thinking at the moment of doing architecture, so I think just normal Maths and Art should be enough =]

i'm in school, doing GCSE ICT, and doing sum wrk at same time. I know someone who has gone University and learning Physics, they need to learn Further Maths, even if they have for A level
Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Economics would be perfect in my opinion.

With regards to Further Maths, although it will not be the easiest option, the workload of doing two Maths qualifications is in my experience considerably less than the workload of two completely different subjects.

Economist1, what would you say, if I had 2 squeeze ICT in there

Firstly, I would question whether or not it is necessary. Most institutions prefer subjects which are generally considered to be 'stronger' than ICT. Plus, you really don't need to have done ICT / Computing at A-level to do it at university. I'm going to stick by my original suggestion which was Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Economics. But since you asked me the question, if I was in your position and I had to drop one (as much as it pains me to say this) it might be better for you to drop Economics.

I may do, as I think Physics is more respectable in Universitys.

Is it?, can any1 tell me.
or is Economies and Business more respectable.

and Is there a university in the UK, which is specialised in ICT
Like Imperial Uni is more specialised in Science than Leeds Uni.

Economics is very respectable, I don't know about Economics AND Business since Business studies in general = :shifty:

As for respectable or not, it depends on what you are going to. If you are going for the traditional Computer Science route (i.e. how computers work) Physics is by far, far, far more respectable (provided you take Maths and Further Maths).

However, since you mentioned you also wanted to do a Business IT (not sure if such a subject exists a university) job, in that sense Economics would be more respectable in understanding how the world works.

As far as I know, Imperial is the best university for Computer Science in London, 3rd best after Oxford and Cambridge in the UK.

Search on ucas website for business IT courses >> 59 courses found.

OP, I'd go for Maths, ICT, physics, economics (but not business). ICT is normally not a great subject but seen as you're doing an IT course, it would still be useful Im sure - its just one of those things. Art is not respected generally but for a degree in architecture, its necessary for many courses.

Well, the course which says it is 'Economies and Business'. There is also Applied Business, but I don't want to take that.

I been thinking of having:
1st Year - ICT, Maths, Physics, Economies and Business
2nd Year - ICT, Maths and Physics

I don't want to take Economies and Busines into the 2nd year because I don't want to do this subject in Univerity, and plus the work load is lots.

If i do Further Maths, that is it a two year course, and I cannot drop after 1 year.

So just to confirm, If i want to go really into Computer Science, I should take Further Maths.

And can someone quickly tell me, what is the differents between Applied subjects, and normal subjects.

Why not do a search of universities that do the degree you want and contact then about the most suitable subjects, they sometimes have them on the degree page on the site.
