What do they actually do when they arent invigilating and where do schools find them? Just pick them up off the streets?

Ex-teachers/staff, Parents, People whose relatives work at the school, retired people who want to make a bit of extra money. Though there is a rep from the JCQ who comes to each centre once during the exam season to check the exams are being carried out by their rules.

I'm working as an invigilator at the moment at my dad's school to earn a bit of extra money and cos my university year has finished.

You guys do realise invigilators are probably as bored as you are, if not more so. Though wearing heels is inconsiderate, we were all advised to wear soft soled shoes so they don't make as much of a noise.
And about water bottles with labels - people can write notes on the labels before the exam, thus why they're not allowed a lot of the time. Might sound silly, but people do do it.
