SOAS PhD Application - suggestions & tips welcomed

Hello everyone,

I want to apply for a PhD in Politics and International Studies to start in Sep/Oct 2015. Any tips on the application would be greatly appreaciated, anything that can enhance my application. For example, do I contact my potential supervisor first, do I contact the school showing interest, tips on writing the thesis proposal... any words of wisdom are welcome.
