RCSI (royal college of Surgeons Ireland)

Hello everyone.
I am hoping to study medicine as an International Student in the UK or Ireland.

i have heard alot about RCSI as they apparently hold a lot of spots for international students and their grade requirements are not to steep. it is a pretty old university and has had famous people such as Louis Pasteur go there.

It is relatively popular and alot of people have heard of it, what my question is simply:

Is RCSI a respected medical college?
( please expand on your points and give me your points of view)

Thank You very much for your time
Goodluck.

From what I'm aware it's no more respected than say, UCD or Trinity, but it's still a good uni (this coming from someone who studies in Dublin). Plus the fees for you would be around '47,000 Euro per annum' - a rather steep cost!
I hear very little about it- it's the only one that's only a medical school, ie. no large university attached so consequently you hear little about it. I do know it's well respected, but would come below Trinity in the pecking order, probably not by much though. The grade requirements will be slightly less than Trinity, but still steep, and more than required in the UK (which is the same for every course- Irish requirements are higher). If you're going to be paying international fees, you should be looking at the best university in the UK or Ireland that your grades will get you into. If you lived in an EU country, it would be different, as your fees for Ireland would be a pittance compared to the UK fees, but international fees- not much difference regardless of country/university. Worth thinking about also that the cost of living is higher in Ireland, in paticular in terms of accommodation and food.

Hey,

I go to RCSI. It is not that great from a personal point of view.

I am not sure if it is respected or not because I am not sure how it is viewed.

They hold a lot of spots of International Students because they charge you incredibly high fees. It isn't worth the money that you pay.

If you want to know more then let me know!

Wow thank you for your opinion. Its nice getting first hand accounts of a school, gives the most realistic picture. I have also heard there are a lot of rich middle eastern students who get accepted there very easily. Is there any truth to this?

I am not exactly sure what grades they required.

I am pretty sure it is not as high as the Irish students

About 2/3 rd's of the class are non-EU. They mainly consist of Malaysians and Middle Eastern Students.

There are some rich Middle Eastern Students. However, a lot of them are paid for by their government and they are required to go back for 5 years after they graduate. So I guess, it would in the various government's interests to send their best students.

There are some capable Foreign students. The person who got highest in our year was from the Middle East and he is pretty clever. Having said that, I was in an anatomy session once and a guy said that a Stomach was a liver.

I know a lot of Canadian students are disappointed by the shoddy facilities that they get for the money they pay, especially when they pay so much and when you compare it to American Universities. I think that is the main problem with the college. There is no way that it is worth paying 50,000 euros a year to come to RCSI. When I was at Imperial, the standards were far better.

It is not completely awful. Though, I am not sure whether that is because I am used to the mediocrity and disorganisation.

Hey, do you know how much the HPAT is worth for us international students?
I would also think about how you would specialise afterwards if you're an international students, does anyone know if non-irish doctors can get training after medical school or do they have to go abroad

RCSI is pretty good as I heard and I have 3 friends studying in it (I am talking about the RCSI in my country, Bahrain).
As previous people said, the money you pay is not worth it, but it is good. Yes, with the money you can pay to a better university, but still, this university is good. If you have no other options, attend it. Money will go and come, just care about your life and studies.
I think RCSI is still prestigious for those who are from the EU, however for international students it is less prestigious as it is really well known for its high tuition fees and lower entry requirements. With that being said, its also a university with all different types you will have slackers and at the same time some really smart and hard working people. So I wouldn't automatically assume the worst from someone from the school.

If your question is whether or not I would be impressed that someone got into RCSI, the answer is it depends on their fee status.

I went to RCSI 20 years ago
Here are a few realities
It really doesn't matter which med school you go to .
Unless you graduate from a university like cambridge or oxford when you apply for jobs it is what you have done as a postgraduate and who you know or network with that's important.
RCSI is hugely respected in North America and there are many well respected RCSI physicians there
It is also highly regarded in Middle East
Yes easier to get into but there are seriously smart middle east and Malaysian students whose main problem is a lack of good English but many are bright
RCSI I felt had the best third of students but also the worse one third mainly language rated. Yes there are a few poor students who get in but they are a minority .
This is a college where there there is an undoubted bias towards the irish in terms of grades so beware of this. This is not a phenomenon you will see in the uk where I am a consultant and examiner now
Enjoy med school. These will be the best years of your life. Work and play hard and remember you make yourself. Med school gives you the very basics and nothing more
Whichever school you apply for in ireland or uk you won't go wrong
