Accommodation Help

Hello.. this may sound like a stupid question but it is my first time applying for accommodation. I plan on (hopefully) starting university this year, depending if I get my firm choice and so I am applying for accommodation in Manchester. I was wondering that if I go for private accommodation and pay a deposit, will I get that money back if I do not get into university? Or will I not get it back and will have to still pay the rent? Thanks

I would recommend going for university-owned accommodation.

With private accommodation, unless it says otherwise in your contract (highly unlikely) then if you don't go there for whatever reason, you will lose your deposit and still have to pay the rent, but will either (a) have no student finance to pay it, or (b) be paying both for that room, and the room in whatever uni city you go to - either situation would be financially crippling.

I don't know if this is true for other accommodation providers, but this is not true for ourselves.

To cement your booking at any of our residences, we ask for a £250 deposit which is fully refundable at the end of your tenancy (minus any deductions for damages). From your booking date, residents have the standard two-week cool down period to cancel.

If you unfortunately did not get into your university due to a) not meeting the entry requirements or b) failing to gain a visa, and had documented proof, then we would 100% refund your deposit and cancel your booking without any charges. Other case-by-cases would be taken into consideration too.
