I doubt they wouldn't let you in just because you hadn't taken a gap year in that country, but it certainly helps to have spent some time there - obviously it improves your language skills, but also demonstrates to your interviewers/the uni that you're sufficiently interested in the language and country and culture to go there. It doesn't have to be a gap year though, plenty of people go travelling in school holidays or the summer between school and uni.
So if I went to France once or twice when I was younger and asked 'Ou sont les toilettes?' in Disneyland, does that count? :biggrin:
