Importance of Gap Years abroad

Will I be at a disadvantage when applying for language courses at either Oxbridge or any other university if I haven't spent a Gap Year abroad at the relevant country? Thanks.

I doubt they wouldn't let you in just because you hadn't taken a gap year in that country, but it certainly helps to have spent some time there - obviously it improves your language skills, but also demonstrates to your interviewers/the uni that you're sufficiently interested in the language and country and culture to go there. It doesn't have to be a gap year though, plenty of people go travelling in school holidays or the summer between school and uni.
