It depends what you mean by part time.

An apprenticeship in something like plumbing demands a lot of hands on work and learning so it would be stupid to train for this just for a Saturday/holiday job.

However if you mean part time as your main job which you do every day from 10 am to say 2 pm - then go for it.

It also depends on the level of the trade - plumbing is a respectable profession as is mechanics and requires a lengthy apprenticeship.

However just general labouring on a building site probably only demands a day or so at the most in instruction.

Hope this helps.

Is it possible to work part time in a trade, something like bicklaying, plumbing etc? Obviously the necessary training would need to be completed beofre starting. Does anyone do thsi or know someone who does?

I know lots of people that do it. Some are retired tradesmen that do a bit on the side to keep their trowel hand in. Alas, others are forced to work part time because their workmanship is so crap they are never in a job for more than a week at a time anyway.

General labouring on a building site is not a trade.

I would also say don't do this just for the money, you need to have a genuine interest in what ever you decide to do.

Also with plumbing the bouble may burst like it has with IT in the next few years as the amount of people getting into it has increased dramaticaly in recent years, this increases competition and brings prices down.

Not forgetting that stories of fabulous wages paid to plumbers are entirely ficticious anyway. According the the National Institute of Plumbing the average self employed plumber earns between 30-40k a year whereas an employed plumber with a couple of years experience can expect to make around 25k.

BTW, off topic a bit, but Winston Churchill was a very keen "hobbyist" bricklayer.
