Hey

Not sure if this is the appropriate thread but....

I was thinking of applying for both the PGCE and SCITT this November, but I only have a degree class of 2:2. I've passed the literacy and numeracy skills test and have about 10 weeks school experience. I am just worried that no teacher training provider will even offer me an interview based on my degree class as most teacher training providers require a 2:1 or more. Would I still stand a chance of getting into a secondary science course? or will the 2:2 hold me back?

Thank you in advance

Also be prepared to explain what other skills and evidence you've got instead. My uni says 2:1 was the standard offer, 2:2 was considered but you had to show something else in terms of experience or personal maturity instead. How would you answer them if they asked at interview about how you will deal with masters level study/what you have done to show them you can handle it?

Also on the above note it would be beneficial to get as much experience as you can before November, if possible in a range of relevant contexts.

Secondary science is currently a shortage subject that often fails to attract enough applicants. Your application is more likely to be considered because of this. If your specialism is Physics or Chemistry then even more so.

Thank you for the reply  My degree is in biology, so I hope that will work in my favour. I'm still undecided whether to go through the PGCE route or the SCITT route though.

Are you sure most require a 2.1? the majority of places I looked when deciding where to apply wanted a 2.2 or above.

Quite a lot of the courses I looked at required a 2:1, but I did see some that require a minimum of a 2:2 and these mainly came from SCITT courses. The problem is that the courses offering a 2:2 or above are a bit far way from home as I was planning on commuting. If it comes to it, I'll just live away from home, but that would be last resort.

Thank you for the advice. I shall take them points into consideration if I happen to get an interview  I have a 2 week work experience lined up at a special needs primary school this September and another 2 week work experience placement planned at a secondary academy in October.

Apply for both?
I would say one thing, I currently commute 40 mins each way to my school and it kills you after a while. If it's anything more than that, don't commute.

You should look at Numeracy Ready online. This was a brilliant tool to help me build confidence and speed. I passed mine yesterday.

Re deadline. My university wanted them passed before the 1st June. However others I applied to wanted them before September so you'd obviously have longer to prepare.... Maybe as it's your last chance, don't rush into doing it unnecessarily, that will also add further unnecessary pressure when all you should be thinking about at the questions and how to answer them...
Good luck!

Hey, I recommend numeracy ready as well. Do every single test available to you.
The questions you fail on, go back to them 1 by 1 and don't leave that question until you know the correct answer and how you get that answer. Then focus on doing it in the right amount of time.

Good luck, it would be a shame to lose out because of a numeracy test xx

I am bricking it! More because I am in my last year of my degree and it has been such a battle! You will love it and remember why you did it in a year's time!

Yes... I work part-time right now and my life is stress free... really not sure how I'll cope with the workload, pressure and amount of information that's going to be thrown at me on the PGCE course... I'm happy with my life at the moment to be honest, but I know it's not going to allow me to reach my full potential by just staying doing this :/

That's exactly how I feel. I am happy at the moment but I won't be happy doing this forever! We are going into this for a career, which will be lots of hard work but worth it in the long run I'm sure. We are so lucky to have this forum, it helps me realise I'm not the only one! Xx

Hi! I've had nothing as yet, don't even know if I've had the date through for the health declaration form?! Now I'm worried haha! I'm not sure whether it's because my offer is still Conditional as I haven't graduated yet?
