Leeds Student Area Guide

Leeds Student Area Guide

A quick and concise guide to some of the more student-oriented areas in Leeds. Ideal for next year's wave of students heading to any of the major Universities and Colleges.

Headingley

Headingley has long been the area of choice for many a student and young professional seeking a multitude of trendy bars, restaurants and coffee shops. It also boasts some great boutique shops and excellent access to the city and all university campuses.

Headingley has always had a great vibe and a fun atmosphere; you’re as likely to bump into a well-dressed sophisticated group heading for cocktails, as you are batman and robin in full fancy dress out on the lash. You can partake in the infamous Otley run in novelty attire of your choice, hit some of the trendy late night bars or tantalise your taste buds in one of Headingley’s award winning restaurants. You really are spoilt for choice.
Don’t forget to take a trip to history-steeped Headingley stadium, recently refurbished and host to local national and international cricket and Leeds’ rugby teams.

Hyde Park

Often seen as Headingley’s slightly more bohemian neighbour, trendy Hyde Park has quickly come to rival Headingley in terms of student popularity. It now offers a great nightlife of its own with laid back bars, cafes and the popular Brudenell Social Club, which has fast gained a reputation as a venue for underground and mainstream artists.
There are few better places to spend a summer’s afternoon than the park itself, with sun-worshippers, rollerbladers, park runners, footballers and ice cream vendors jostling for position on the grass. The famous Hyde Park Picture House is right in the middle of proceedings and one of the last surviving “Picture Palaces” in the UK. It has a reputation for showing unusual and award winning independent films in a truly atmospheric setting. It really is an area full of character, with the added bonus of Leeds Uni and Leeds Met only being a short walk away.

Burley

With a location to suit everyone, the Burley and Burley Park areas of Leeds attract a fantastically diverse group of residents with plenty of students drawn to the area, due to its proximity and ease of transport to all universities.
Trinity and All Saints students will find it particularly handy as the area’s station has a route straight through to the campus.
Burley boasts some great pubs of its own, several award winning international restaurants, and a huge leisure complex with gym, cinema, bowling alley and a host of household name eateries. It’s got everything you’re likely to need!

Meanwood

With a few new bars and shops to follow, Meanwood’s popular location is likely to be further enhanced as an alternative to nearby Headingley and Chapel Allerton.
Meanwood also boasts good access to the city and surrounding area, a growing retail park and a number of small independent shops. There’s also plenty of green space with the popular Meanwood Park and great walking and cycling along the Meanwood Valley Trail. Meanwood is proud of it's countryside feel and offers good recreational options as well as reasonably priced, varied housing.

Woodhouse

Located just a five minute walk from the city campuses of Leeds Uni and Leeds Met, Woodhouse is a great value alternative to adjacent Hyde Park. The neighbourhood has also long been a popular student stomping ground, whilst professional residents have been drawn to its proximity to the city centre.
The far end of Woodhouse backs onto the popular Meanwood Valley Trail whilst Woodhouse Moor offers a bit of its own parkland before you get to Hyde Park. Good value and an envious location for the city and universities.

Leeds City Centre / City Campuses

There’s simply not enough space to sing the praises of Leeds’ city centre; more bars than you can shake (an increasingly blurry!) stick at, some of the North of England’s finest restaurants, theatres and performing arts venues and one of the most popular city centre shopping venues outside of London.
Leeds is a hugely diverse and ever-changing city so our advice is simply to get yourself amongst it! There are various separate areas around the city centre, including popular spots overlooking the river and near the two university campuses located near the outskirts of the city centre. The latter provides a great location for those students wanting to get to lectures in a hurry and stay in the shadows of campus, whilst professional residents will enjoy the proximity to Hyde Park and the university inspired nightlife, whilst still keeping the central amenities within walking distance.
