Personal Statement

I'm writing my personal statement and my year group are constantly being pressured to 'get loads of relevant experience'.
I want to do English Lit and Philosophy and there isn't really any direct experience i can do for that, plus it seems really discriminatory to me that you're considered more passionate if you go out to surround yourself in what you want to do, as opposed to read books, write every day, have an open and eager mind etc.

For the course i want to do it seems more valuable to maintain what i'm already doing (reading, enjoying it, watching/researching any extra material), and what i've always done because i love both subjects, rather than force my way into some obscure line of experience.

Opinions? Is it absolutely necessary to have previous experience? (I've done a lot of teacher kind of experience.)
