Reference from previous employer

I want to make sure I'm understanding this. I have a job offer with a notice that it is conditional on references, one of which is to be from my previous employer. It didn't say "one of your previous employers", just "previous employer". Two people I know said it meant any of my past employers, but I thought it just meant my most recent one (the one just prior to the employer with said offer). I, of course, would ask one of the HR team to clarify but as it's the weekend, I thought I would ask here beforehand. What do you think?

If you have two previous employers who are willing to give you a reference, then use them! I used my two previous employers for the second job I have got, and had no problems.
