Is this a correct use of a semi-colon?

I apologise in advance if this is the incorrect place to make this post.

I am applying for a summer placement and wanted to check that my use of a semi-colon is correct:

"I've been interested for a while in doing research in medical physics; as a GCSE student I had a work experience placement at the radiology department in Queen Mary's Hospital (Sidcup) and I attended a medical physics taster course at UCL when considering course options as a sixth form student."

I'm sure I've been taught countless times before about the correct and incorrect usage of a semi-colon but I'm still unsure for some reason.

Thanks in advance!

Although I don't know the rules of the usage of a semi-colon, I would say that it is a proper semantics in this context. But if I were you I would prefer a full stop, it looks better.
A semi colon here is wrong, you need to use a full stop as you are writing a new thought, it isn't really an extension to the previous thought technically speaking.
