Jobs while at uni

Is anyone else planning on getting a job? Or any students who heave already been at Leicester, did you get a job? How many hours did you work? Is it easy to get a job (as I have no experience!) Should I look for a job on campus (bar work), is there anything else? Or should I think about working in a shop? Do I wait till I get to uni, and ask shops about jobs? Or is there a way of getting a job before I go to Uni?

I don't think getting a job is a good idea (for me at least). It will cause more stress and as a consequence you less time to study or socialise...

But if you desperately need the money then it's all good...

i work at the spar shop in the DMU campus centre, is fab!

i work about 16 hours a week, depending on how busy i am with my studies.

if you get a job, dont rely on it for money, use whatever you get as disposable cash. most places put uni students on casual contracts becuase of summer hols etc, so they can drop you at any time.

if it is possible, dont get a job cus they can be a bit of a problem around exams/deadlines etc

I didn't work in my first year, but I had to get a job for second year as I just didn't have enough money.

For anyone going University of Leicester I recommend tour guiding. You can sign up and it doesn't matterif you can't do any of the days you stay on the books. You get emailed about open days and you just say whether you can or can't work. It's usually a wednesday morning. You guide students and their parents round campus, then take them on a tour of the accomodation. You'll probs have someone come and talk to you about it when you start in halls.

You could also get a job serving dinner in halls. Not very glamorous but means you haven't gotta go far to work.

There's the union bars, or the union shop. Although be prepared for late nights! When the licensing law changed my mate who works behind the bar had to work til about 6 in the morning. She ended up just hanging round til our half 8 lecture!

There is also an "employment agency" called Workbank in the union. They can help sort you out.

Alternatively you could always try asking in the city centre etc for jobs. It'll be coming up to xmas so they'll be looking for temps.

If you already have a job, you could always ask for a store transfer. Leicy has all the major shops.

I work in Evans as well as doing Tour guiding. I also seem to have prostituted myself out to other departments and have been doing prospectus packing. As well as working for the careers service by doing telephone work.
I still managed to get a 2:1 in my second year. As long as you're sensible and make your uni work come first then any other employment will just help earn you bit extra drinking money! Plus you'll make loads of friends at work as well.

Also, if you are thinking of applying to the bars or union shop, you need to apply the first few days of term, otherwise you'll be put on a waiting list of like hundreds!

Hope thats of some help.

They'll come round to halls and give a talk in the JCR about tour guiding. Obviously it means you have to have your room tidy to show visitors round.

If you don't then PM when term starts and I'll give you my bosses email address. The other thing you could do is go to the top floor of the Astley Clarke building, when you start and ask for Jacky Wetzig, or Sam.

And SlipperyD a transfer to Asda would work quite well. The Oadby asda is literally 10 mins away from the catered halls.

You could always apply in the 2 pubs next to Nixon Court. One's called the Donkey and the other's name escapes me. Oh and there's the dry dock as well, which is a 10 second walk from Nixon! They're quiter than the union. Alternatively you could apply to Morrisons, The cinema, the pub by the cinema, nando's, or mecca bingo. All are no more than 10 mins walk from Nixon

Just to let you know I was in the Loaded Dog today (student bar on London Road quite near to uni, you WILL go there on bar crawls in the first few weeks!) They are advertising for staff.

Also poundland in the city centre is advertising for xmas temps. There were other shops but I can't remember where as I'd had 2 pitchers of pimms by then!
