The Student Room Group

At what age did you have a clear idea on what you wanted to do career wise?

I finally figured out at the age of 22 that I want to go into support work, counselling or sports media. The problem is I haven't studied anything related to them at a serious level or got experience in those areas yet, but thankfully I still have time  What about you?

Since I've been at school I've always had a passion for science and at secondary school I've had some amazing and inspirational science teachers. For some reason until about year 9 I had thought that there was no way I would do engineering - I think it's because I had no idea that there were so many different types and thought that all engineering was like mechanical engineering. Then last year at parents evening my physics teacher brought it up again and suggested it was something I might like to do so I did a bit of research and ended up going on a course last summer. Now it's something I'd really like to do and I'm so glad that my teacher suggested it otherwise I would have completely ruled it out and missed out. I may end up doing something completely different though it depends on where life takes me
I still haven't :frown:

Lol, I thought I had a good idea from like year 10. Turned out that was garbage. I only figured it out just after it was too late to change my UCAS. That's why I'm on a gap year.

About 23. I saw someone on here mention Graduate Entry Medicine and I had a lightbulb moment.
I'm 19 and have the vague idea that i'd like a career in geology but what career path I want to follow is still a mystery to me :P
Likewise, I never thought I'd be interested in that at all at high school, I only randomly went to a geology taster session at 6th form open day and realised it sounded interesting - I'm now studying geology at Uni so i'm very glad I went to that session!

19 when I started my biomedical science course at college. I knew I wanted to study biology at uni and then specialise in microbiology in particular. 3 years on and I'm loving my biology degree

Lucky for you, in counselling and particularly support work, experience and personal attributes are valued far above education

Mine have changed massively over time:
10 years old = wanted to be a pilot.
15 years old = wanted to be in the army/navy as a commando
18 years old = wanted to be either a physiotherapist or nutritionist
20 years old = wanted to be a clinical psychologist
22 years old (current) = want to be a medical doctor (perhaps neurology) or a cognitive neuroscientist.

^.^
About 18.
8 - wanted to become a teacher after watching Matilda...
11 - wanted to be an optician
12 - wanted to be a nurse
13 - wanted to be a solicitor
16 - wanted to be a nurse (again)
18 - wanted to be a teacher.

After 10 years, I'd come full circle. Only problem is, I'm now 21 and too scared to make the jump! Guess part of me thinks I'll change my mind again!
22 wanted to start a business and become my own boss. Now i have a small startup business.
It was at the golden age of 16 that I decided I wanted to pursue a lifelong career as a professional Hoodman.

15, there is so much pressure on young people to know what they want to do early on these days. Luckily for me I always had an idea it just took me until then to realize that i could actually do it
