Wow! That’s amazing!!!

Do you think the work experience requirements will be reduced for 2023 entry?

I think there is a decent chance that it will be reduced but I can’t say for sure. I’d recommend emailing the universities to see what they say. The more experience you get the easier interviews are. There’s often questions about your understanding of the veterinary profession so the more places you’ve gone the easier that is to answer.

I strongly recommend get a large and a small animal practice as well as lambing (check the national sheep association lambing list). If you can add on a rescue/cattery/kennel/groomers as this also helps.

Abattoirs and labs are great but they are extras so don’t worry about that. The only abattoir I could find that would take me was the one at the university of Bristol. I went round with 5th heat stufents on rotation so I’d say it’s worth a try. I did phone in sick to school thought!

Yeah I’ve done 1 week of SA vets and have 1 week of lambing planned for April. I am trying to get stables experience as well but am finding it really hard to volunteer because I know nothing about horses and have spent basically no time with them!!

Try riding schools! They are often more willing to take people than most other places are. I did an equine vet as my work experience but I don’t really have any experience with horses so for my EMS I’m just going to a riding school!

Are you fairly rural? Dairy is a decent one to get if you can. Farm parks were the easiest to get for me. As long as you have the right amount of weeks and have a range of placements you’ll be fine!

Nope I am slap bang in the inner/outer suburbs, so it would be impossible to commute to a farm :frown:

Hey! I'm planning to do vet med at uni in 2023, possibly Liverpool or Nottingham.
I'm studying Biology, Chemistry and Maths A-Levels and I've managed to get a few work experience placements so far including small animals, equine and farm animals

That’s really great! I’m a current Nottingham student so if you have any questions let me know!

Thank you! Would you say that lambing is essential? Have most people who get into uni done it? I'm struggling to find a placement and I'm not sure whether I need it or not

I didn't do lambing and still got offers. It's not listed as a work experience requirement.

Most people at university has done it. That being said some didn’t and especially with covid it’s less important. I would say it’s a good piece of experience for you to have but there are people who get in without it. Have you tried the national sheep associations lambing list? That’s how I found my lambing. Some places offer accomodation which could widen your options. What area/region are you in?

I'm in Berkshire, there's tonnes of vets (farm animal, small animal, even camelid specialists!). Unfortunately no one is taking placements at the moment due to COVID :frown:
My local vets and my nearby large animal practice have said they might have placements available in the summer. I live next to a beef farm, so I'm going to ask there too

I would recommend asking at kennels/cattery too. My daughter did a 2 week EMS placement at one and that led to a job - they are busiest in the school holidays so that can work quite well if you have transport

Hi, I’m sorry if this thread has already been made, (in that case it can be deleted), I’ve looked for a thread for students currently in the summer between Year 11 and Year 12 who’ll be applying to study Veterinary Medicine in 2023 but couldn’t find one.

In September I’ll be doing Biology, Chemistry and Maths A Levels.

Hi! I'm in year 13 currently, but I'm taking a year and then applying for Nottingham Trent vet nursing for 2023

That’s great!
Hi everyone! I am in year 12. I go to a french school in Turkey. My three "specialties" aka equivalants of a-levels are biology, maths and physics/chemistry. It's been hard to find work experience so far, I've only done a week of a small animal practise. Got 2 weeks lined up for wildlife research and 1 week in a cattary this summer, but that's about it. I'm thinking of applying to RVC, Edinburgh, Bristol and Glasgow! Very excited to move to the UK  But it's so hard to find work experience...
