what is f(x)?

Can someone please explain it to me I don't get it.. my teacher said it is A* topic for Gcses and I really want to know what it is..
internet these days doesn't really help explaining it.

f(x) can also be a short hand way of doing something. Say you're transforming graphs, the question will ask you to 'Transform line f(x) by......'. f(x) is simply referring to the line they give you.

It could also be 'Is (x-3) a factor of f(x)?' f(x) would be a polynomial and you answer the question as such.

Hope this helps? If not, the following link explains everything...

http://www.mathsisfun.com/sets/function.html
f(x) is a function which uses x as the input. For instance, f(x)=2x means the function f(x) has the value of 2x, where x is the input value.
f(x) means function of x
you know how you can get like x^2 for example, which you'd probably write as y = x^2
you could also write it f(x) = x^2, and then say, you could write f(x=2) then you put 2 into all values of x, so in this case you'd get 4
idk if that makes sense or not

I think you need to explain it properly. If it's in maths then f(x) is used in frequency tables in maths to find the averages. In this case 'F' is the frequency of the graph. In the picture I've attached the frequency is shown but sometimes it could be like "the number of students" or something similar to that. And the 'X' in the graph in the picture is the "Number of eggs per nest". To find out the average number of eggs per nest you have to use F(x). So you multiply frequency by the X.

I hope you understand what F(x) is now  Btw I've only explained what F(x) is used for and not how to find the average.

Oh and this is the image I was talking about

No, just no.
f(x) is basically y
whatever the value for x in the function is, you substitute into the equation

No, just no.

Oh...? Is this f(x) in some kinda graph :s-smilie: I'm so confused right now and what's this topic under...coz I clearly need to revise it >_<

f(x) means a function of x.

An easy way to think of it is to remember those 'function machines' you probably did when you were younger (http://freedomtoteach.collinseducation.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/FunctionMachine.jpg and http://www.scimathmn.org/stemtc/sites/default/files/images/frameworks/math/8.2.1/image001.png)

So for the second one we could have f(x)=x-12. So when we input 20, we have f(20)=20-12=8

No problem. Read the other posts in the thread and it should give you a basic understanding.
