I don't think choosing not to do it would be sufficient to become 'alpha' - often the reasons why a person might choose not to would be from a place of anxiety or uncertainty. I think a common reason to choose not to do something difficult is to protect one's own ego from being confronted with failure. It's much easier to say, "I don't want to do it," than to try and fail. In that situation, using the terminology, that's a beta being beta.

Oh come on people we're not in the stone age anymore. We don't run around in packs following the alpha male and alpha female and having them rub their glands against us to assert dominace. And if you do still so this I suggest you catch-up with the modern world.
