De Broglie wavelength

I don't think I was taught this but why does the de Broglie wavelength needs to be equal to the path difference for constructive interference

Do you know how double slit interference works for light waves or surface waves in water?

This is a question about wave-like behaviour of particles - moving particles act like waves, and the wavelength of the waves particles act like is given by the deBroglie equation.
