It's usually for a year, although there might be a handful of societies whose membership might only cover a semester.

It entirely depends on the uni, but in our case, at YSJ, we pay for annual memberships, but it covers everything to do with the society and allows them to fund it.

Hi,

It is best to check with the society you want to join. Sometimes it is a one off annual payment but it might be monthly depending on the society.

Do you have a way to contact them or access to their contact information?

Hiya!

Yes University societies are so much fun! Societies also post on social media so you can see what type of activities they get up to and hopefully there is always something for someone and if not you and two others can create your own.

Hey @Hardest Job, 😊

From experience joining a society at university is lots of fun! It's a great way for you to meet likeminded people outside of your course and to have time away from your studies to socialise. You can usually view which societies are available at each university through the Students' Union website and students who start university will have the options to attend a freshers fair where members from lots of different clubs and societies will be there to speak to.

All the best,
Sarah

I speculate I'm studious. London is the biggest city. Products won't be sold well in North of London. True?

Hi,
Society's are a lot of fun as there a great way to meet people on the same wavelength. It really depends on the individual society how often they take membership and how much membership costs. eg, at Lancaster the sports teams tend to be a bit more expensive as they get access to more facilities.
Hope this helps!

Hi there,

At sunderland most of our societies it is a one time payment for the whole year and you would just renew it in the next academic year. There may be some societies who do memberships by semester but I think the majority do it yearly

I hope this helps,

Hey there!

It's not dumb at all! For some you do yes. It depends on the society. For some sports societies, you pay a fee at the start of the year which includes everything from uniform to coach trips to away games. For some you pay for those things as you go. It depends on what you'll be doing as part of the society because they're usually run by students with not much university influence. Therefore, for things like trips you are expected to contribute or pay the whole fee. If it's a society that doesn't really require much financial help then I don't see why you'd have to pay. For example, if the society is dedicated to Harry Potter or something like that then there's not really much cost involved in that to sit and chat about the franchise etc. , whereas something like a competitive sport could incur cost.

Hope this helped!
