I'm probably being a bit dense, but having had a search (read: epic trawl through the massive previous threads), I can't find anyone who has ever applied for the Science and Engineering stream on TSR! Anyone got any info on this, or applying for it? I can't even find particularly large amounts of detail on the CS site itself.

Good luck to everyone applying and thanks in advance

Did the self-assessment tests - top 45% for the Verbal test (a surprise as I'm usually much better with these) and top 15% for the Mathematical test.

Going to do the practice tests later today and the 'real' ones later on this week.

Got to do these tests today... Really worried that I'm going to panic majorly and just have a mental block on everything!

How long does it take to know if you've been successful at the online tests after you've done them?

I found out after a few hours.

Normal GFS people won't know until sometime between mid-october and mid december. It's horrible!

What are you studying? Maybe one most suited to your interests?

Just submitted my application for the GES. It closes in three weeks so I'm guessing we'll hear back after that.

Biomedical Science
it may not be the most hardcore science for the Science and Engineering

looking at it I may rule out the Diplomatic Service and Houses of Parliament, whould be fun to work there and I do understand alot of its workings

after taking the self assesment test seems I need to work on my Verbal stuff below 45%, while I did ok in the Mathematical test top 45%, bit shocked because I had a hard time on a few of the maths questions

they are hard

I'd appreciate it if someone could clarify the scheme combinations which can be applied for concurrently this year. This seems to have been altered from previous years. So for example, could someone apply for the Economic, Statistical, Social Research and Generalist schemes (all at once)?

Yes. However you must apply in order of preference (i.e apply for Economics first if it is your most preferred role). You should also note that the competency questions they ask you are different for all four roles. They do make it relatively easy for you to apply for other roles since you don't have to fill in most of the application form again and you aren't required to repeat the verbal reasoning and numerical tests.

I don't think you can apply for the Generalist scheme with the others - I've applied to the Economist scheme, and if I try to add an application the only ones on offer are the other analytical schemes - Statistician, Social Research and Operational Research. This page shows the four different combinations you can apply for: http://faststream.civilservice.gov.uk/The-Fast-Streams/

Hi everyone,

Just a quick question for everyone thats applied, on the higher education page of registration process did you add up all your tariff points for a total or just enter the ucas tariff for any unlisted qualifications?

Can't believe I'm getting stuck before the actual application lol

Thanks
Sarah

I added all of them; listed and unlisted. So, 4 A levels worth plus any other random stuff which adds UCAS points.
How long do they give you to do the tests? Places I've previously applied for only give 3 days, which leaves me totally unprepared.
Hi, I'm interested in both the analytical (social research) faststream and the graduate faststream. You can only apply for one. I think I stand a better chance at gaining a position on the analytical stream, as I have research experience and relevant degrees. My question is, once you're in, is it possible to move about? I'm not sure if I'd want to stay in research forever.

Is anyone here on the analytical stream? It would be much appreciated if you could shed some light onto what you do on a daily basis.

Thanks.

I'm on the Economist Stream. It's fair to say that my current post isn't heavy on economic analysis and I sit in a policy/strategy team. I typically respond to enquiries from press office, and assist colleagues in obtaining and presenting data - alongside longer-term research projects. Other posts will be wholly analysis based.

I wouldn't be too concerned as there is nothing stopping a specialist applying for a generalist post - so long as you can demonstrate the required competencies. For example, I know an analyst who's doing a post in private office.

I tend to agree that you would stand a better chance of success applying to the analytical stream, though it is a judgement call. You might refer to the 'fast stream recruitment reports' on the Cabinet Office website.

Doesn't sound like you do anything important...
