apart from the stuff mentioned, i like the french restaurant on little clarendon st, the milkshakes at shakespeare and moo-moo's, and the cuccina pizzeria in st. clement's. great thread, btw, i should've made one when i joined but no...

Moo Moos! :gah:  :moon:
Cous Cous Cafe is a Lebanese place on St Clements near Magdalen Roundabout, friendliest staff ever, seriously, also excellent food especially the variety of baguettes, wraps etc, easily as good as Taylor's or Olive's on the High Street but in a bit of a more interesting setting  If you're looking for a Chinese Lan Kwai Fong on Cowley has (imo) the best food and a great variety of cocktails (must be at least 100). Enjoy

I like Santorini, the Greek restaurant on Cowley Street.

Where's Cowley Street?

I have been going to the Greek at Summertown shops for many years but the landlords have repossessed for redevelopment.
Greek wise there's also Manos' in Jericho, near St Anne's/Victoria's Arms pub.

You're welcome, its sort of like a....cafe/dehli deal more so than a restaurant, seems better if you want to grab a quick snack etc. I enjoyed the fact that they had seasonal sweets though, just like Athens (though a bit dryer).

I've yet to try Santorini here.
George Street is a good place to start because there are loads of restaurants there - I usually go to the Zizzi's there with my parents when they come to see me, but I've also heard good things about Bella Italia. With friends I usually just go somewhere cheap like Fire & Stone or Nando's, or else go to the Turf. If you want a sandwich then Olives on High Street and the Alternative Tuck Shop on Holywell Street are both amazing, and you should go to G&D's for ice cream at least once while you're in Oxford.

Pierre Victoire on Little Clarendon Street is great and, I think, my favourite restaurant in Oxford. Yum yum.

However, for Chinese, Sojo (on Park End Streent) is fantastic. It's the best Chinese I've ever eaten at. Giles Coren reviewed it in The Times in 2009 and, I think, called it the best Chinese in the country (review here but behind paywall so I can't check).

I was personally disappointed by Sojo. Certainly nowhere near the best Chinese in the country.
I like SoJo but I think some dishes are better than others. The all you can eat part isn't great.

That Chinese one in the old school house. Goumet burger and the stir fry place on cowley are also good.
Does Atomic Burger on Cowley Road count? (:coma:)
I'm going to back edamame here; the boyfriend and I went during interviews on a Thursday night, but purposely went quite early at about six because I had a feeling we'd be waiting all night otherwise. I loved the sushi platter and the friendly atmosphere, and I thought the price wasn't too bad either! Walking back past it a little while later that evening, the queue stretched all the way down the street and I felt rather smug

Its all right...but mega small and...I don't know I've just never got the hype.

To be honest, I'm not overly impressed with the food here. I trained as a chef for a very good restaurant during my gap years, and spent a lot of time in London beforehand, and overall Ox doesn't compare very favourably.

During Fresher's week there is a little guide about the town they usually give out, they have a list of really good places there.

I would also like to add "The Nosebag" to the list, expensive and short on the menu, yes, but they have excellent teas and cakes and not all that bad for lunch. There is a cafe/bistro sort of the thing specialist in Organic food just of the high street that is also good for lunch etc, though the wait is fackin huyage.

Pizza wise...well you won't find an AMAZING pizza in Oxford, but there are several over decent ones.

Check out Koi on george street. Nice lunch menu of two courses for 7 something and good and consistent.
(asian/japanese). That being said....edamame is like the real japanese deal

I'm a local and to be honest I'd tell anyone to go to Cowley Road, definitely Atomic Pizza is the best place. You've also got a couple of good Indian places there aswell as on St Clements. If you can be bothered to wait on the bus for ages you could go to Kassam Stadium for all-you-can-eat Chinese food which is actually quite nice too.
I'll back Hassan's and Atomic Pizza and raise you Mission Burrito.

Some that haven't been mentioned yet... Are they still around?
Moya - just up St Clements & does fab cocktails & ?Slovakian food - yummy & different.
& The Big Bang - up near Somerville just round the corner from Little Clarendon - amazing bangers & various types of mash & gravy + good atmosphere.
Chopstix - up Cowley Road - all you can eat Chinese

& some that have that I concur with...
Pink Giraffe - St Clement's - Chinese
Mario's - Cowley Road - good Pizza
Pierre Victoire - Little Clarendon - French
Le Petit Blanc (now Brasserie Blanc?) - round the corner of Little Clarendon near Somerville - French

More standard kind of places...
Quod - High street
Browns - Woodstock

For lunches/teas...
Georgina's - Covered Market - for nachos/potato skins etc.
Grand Cafe - High Street - best afternoon tea
G&Ds - all 3 of them! Cowley, Aldates, Little Clarendon - Ice cream, sundaes, cake, bagels etc.
Ben's Cookies - Covered marker - Cookies
Queens Lane Coffee House
Alternative Tuck Shop - road by New College at the Magdalen end turning up to the science area - wraps & stuff for lunch - bonus points for seeming to recognize me/remember my usual when I came back way after the years of being based in the Science area?! & I didn't go there that obsessively, honest...

Breakfast
Browns - Covered market

& showing age - Mongolian Wok used to be where Opium Den or Sojo are now & that was amazing - huge big wok thing for cooking & you took up your selections.
& I nearly shed a tear when Cleo's Creperie (Gloucester Green) closed.

Om nom nom - good thing I'll be visiting soon.

Edamame is an amazing find that you need to make sooner rather than later. Just make sure to get there right at the start of any opening times or you will be queueing. The edamame and miso soup are particular highlights.

I've never been to Paddyfields, but only recently discovered Sojo opposite. Most authentic chinese food I've been able to find outside of China, stunningly good.

I've also given far too much of my student loan to Olive's, a Sandwich Shop/Deli on the High Street. Blindingly good sandwiches with a rotating "Baguette of the Week". The Rare roast beef with blue cheese and horseradish and Italian Chicken Club are particularly excellent BotWs.

You'll also have people rave at you about G&Ds, don't get your hopes up, it's average at best.

Hate to break it to you but I'm almost certain Big Bang (tax avoidance) and Chopsticks have both closed.

Though I did forget about Pink Giraffe. Table served all you can eat chinese food for £16? Why, yes I will.
