Random qurestion but do you think that work experience in a pet shop would be helpful or not? I mean its animal stuff but no one ever mentions it ^^'

So long as you're mainly dealing with pets & not sales/products, a pet shop can count towards work experience. Ideally you want a bigger pet store with more animals rather than a small, family run corner pet shop.

I'm going to the RVC open day!. Has anyone signed up for the "get vetted" course at the RVC in August? Has anyone been on those workshops before? Looks like their website will be useful but seems like its still being built :-(

Although it may be a bit iffy at times I think they will try really really hard with the first bunch if students to make it work  Also there's so few of you,you will get so much more 1 on 1 attention and they'll have done their research and have real lecturers and vets that have worked in education before too

Because they will be offering a new veterinary course does this mean that they wont have rvcs accreditation yet ? This would mean that we would study for the 5 yrs and not be gauranteed actual qualification by the end ... SCARY

I had this concern too, but I spoke to someone about it and they said that although they may not have it now, they will have it by the time you finish the course so you should come out with an accredited degree. Because the course is so similar to Nottinghams', I doubt that they will have any trouble getting it accredited. But I agree that you may not be gauranteed an actual qualification but im sure there is no need to worry

Hey everyone! I'm also applying this year and was just wondering whether anybody else is studying the IB? If so, do you guys know how many points an average offer is given to? I know the entry requirements vary from a 34-41 but with a group of applicants that tend to over-achieve, what is the general offer? Would be great to know  Thanks!

Hi, it would be really helpful to talk to you!
I'm doing my AS Levels at the moment- Biology, Chemistry, Maths and German. In the January exams I got: C1 Maths- A D1 Maths- B (so in maths im averaging an A), Biology- B (2 marks off an A!!!) and Chemistry- B (just!). I'm not resitting anything, I've just had my two German exams and I've got maths chemistry and biology coming up. I'm planning on dropping German next year. I understand that for veterinary medicine at Cambridge I need A*AA... Im hoping that at AS i will achieve AAB (the B in chemistry), do you think Cambridge would look at this as possible to convert to A*AA at A2? I'm mainly worried about chemistry to be honest as I got a C in the coursework so really im averaging a C :/

hiya! coincidentally, those are the exact same alevels that i do  the thing with cambridge is that they're much more based in academia than the other unis and one of their main selection criteria, if not their main, is high ums marks at as level- as in around 90% average in every relevant exam (so for us that's bio, chem and maths). also, they're really hot on chemistry (it's compulsory at most if not all colleges) and i have heard of some people being told that their A* has to be in chemistry, so i'm not sure how they'd look on a B at as level. so i guess what i'm saying is that you have to bear in mind that you'll be up against candidates who meet those criteria and you will be directly compared against them. HOWEVER that's definitely not to say that you shouldn't apply. different colleges go for different things, and some may put more emphasis on other stuff, like extra curricular activities, so it would probably be a good idea to phone around colleges and see what advice they have before ruling cambridge out. it depends on whether you think it's worth it- we're only allowed to choose 4 unis and the other ones put less emphasis on "academic excellence" (although still more than most courses), so they are probably safer options. but i only put cambridge down as a wild shot- never in a million years thought i'd be made an offer- so i'd say if you want it enough then you should give them a call and discuss it with them before you make any yes/no decisions
When do we have to do the BMAT? Before or after send our personal statement?

You sit the BMAT in early November, I think the entries for it have to be by October 15th at the latest

Yep the BMAT is start of november, registration for it opens at the start of September - I would register as soon as you can, there is a cut off date at which centres can charge you more as a 'late' registration, and it's already pretty expensive.

UCAS forms need to be in by October 15th, but again do so earlier if you can  I remember registering for BMAT and sending off my UCAS form at the same sort of time, start-mid September.

Thanks so much for the advice! I think I will have a ring round and ask them  if you dont mind me asking, what grades did you get at AS and A2?
Also, I wanted to ask about experience that I need? In year 10 I did a week at the PDSA, I did a week of lambing this Easter and since September ive been volunteering once a week at my local vets. Im also currently trying to secure placements at a wildlife park and a small animal petting zoo type place. How does this look?

I think it depends where you apply. Where are you planning on applying to? I've heard Cambridge aren't too fussed about the quantity/quality of work experience, and Nottingham I know interviewed someone last year with only about 6/7 weeks (the minimum) but both Edinburgh and Liverpool, when I applied sent work experience forms to map the variety and quantity of work. It is especially important to Liverpool, so I would probably avoid applying there with what you have. I would recommend getting some dairy experience as I think thats pretty "core" and a large animal vets if your once a week is small and stables. Some have forms on their website giving a suggestion for the types of experience you should aim to get. You will need to at least reach the minimum required by the universities which varies, but I would definitely say try get more than this, as the people you're applying against will have more and its VERY competitive  Its also important how you write it on your statement, if you learnt loads and can express this, thats better than just bullet pointing all your weeks

Ugh, same. I wrote like an essay about why I want to attend, which is probably why I won't get in! It sounds so good :frown:

I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but that email was sent to 50 people, and there are 50 places... Bit still, end of next week we'll all know!! The essay bit was actually quite difficult, trying to tell them everything without sounding too generic!
