That depends.

You didn't give nearly enough context.

Is it the kind of situation where I'm at work on a day off and get a call asking me to come in for some overtime? I wouldn't mind being "late" for callout like that.

In that case even more so being late is much better than not showing up at all. Refusing to come in on the first day instantly makes everyone think you're not dependable or reliable. Also if the apprenticeship is any good, they would have made a schedule for your induction.
