is there a second-hand book fair near start of term - or place folks go once they get their reading list in Freshers Week?

Hi!

There is usually a second-hand book sale in Alexandra Square during Freshers week or soon after, and older years will likely be trying to sell their textbooks in group chats as well. You can also buy second hand kitchen equipment, plants, and other stuff for your room very cheaply in Alex square.

Hope this helps!

Have you found one yet

I don't think there are groupchats you can already join this year, but you will encounter them during your first days of university. On the day you move in, you will attend an introduction to your flat and college. Someone will make a groupchat for your flat, and you will later get added to a groupchat for your house. During Welcome Week, you will attend an introductory day for your department. Someone there will probably create a groupchat and share it with you.

This is the website of the second-hand book sale. Other university equipment is sold at the same place and time as the textbooks.

Welcome to Lancaster University!

This thread is a place for our new students preparing to join us in autumn 2023. It is a place for you to ask questions about joining us, and for you to begin to connect with other students on their way to Lancaster.

The best place to start when you are looking at what to do to prepare for coming here is our website.

But if you can't find what you looking for, ask your question in here and one of our student ambassadors will be able to answer you.

We can't wait to meet you and welcome onto Campus in just a few short weeks time!

Hi all,
My name is Hamza I will be studying bsc computer science this October, feel free to contact me to network, it will be good to make friends before joining
Hello all,

Congratulations on everyone who is coming to Lancaster! It is a fantastic university and place to study/make friends.

I’m Dom and I recently graduated from my undergraduate degree in Lancaster for English Literature, Creative Writing and Practice. I’m now moving onto a masters degree in Literature Studies from October, also at Lancaster University and would be happy to help with any questions about literature or creative writing degrees!

I was also a member of Furness College, though as a graduate I’ll now be a part of Graduate College. I don’t live on campus anymore but I can definitely answer any questions you all may have.

Congratulations again to all offer holders and future freshers!

Dom,
English Literature and Creative Writing Ambassador
Hello there, If your course currently does not include a masters or you dont meet the grades for your course with masters, is it possible to enrol on the masters programme when your in second or third year of uni?

Kind Regards
If you have accepted a place in clearing but now want to add a year in industry, who do you contact to see if this is possible? Head of management school/department or ug admissions?
my daughter has been confirmed a ensuite room in Pendle - we didn't really get to see the accom at Open Day, the rooms look nice, anyone tell me (i) roughly how many sharing a flat?(iii) are there any social spaces ?

Hi!

Congratulations to your daughter on her place! I had a few friends in Pendle ensuite during first year who absolutely loved it there. 8 people share each flat, and there no designated social spaces. However, the kitchens tend to be very spacious, and we found that 10-16 people could comfortably socialise in the kitchen.

Hope this helps!

Is there a car parking space available for students in the campus?
Hi, just wondering even if we don’t choose catered accommodation or buy those freedom eating plan, we can still pop in to places like marketplace, hive, dining hall etc to order food from time to time right? Just in case I don’t have time to cook sometimes

Hi @sara222

There is parking available for all students which is 3.30 pounds on a weekday and free at the weekend. If you have to use a car, you may also qualify for a permit. You can check if you're eligible here: https://www.lancaster.ac.uk/sustainability/action/travel/parking/student-parking/

That being said, most students find that they don't need a car whilst they're at Lancaster. The buses between town and campus are very frequent, and there are good cycling and walking routes too!

Hope this helps

Hey @little 0220

You definitely can! This is probably the most economical option if you're planning to cook most of the time and it would give you more flexibility with timings. I usually get lunch from Hive about once a week when I'm on the Health Innovation Campus for lectures, which works really well.

We look forward to welcoming you to campus!

Hi!

I've just spoken to admissions about this. You are very welcome to contact them at [email protected] before you register to request a course change. They'll make sure the request goes to the right place even if it isn't something they can action directly!

Hey @kjasdghkdb

You'll probably want to contact your subject department about this directly as it will vary depending on your course. They'll be best placed to help you out.

Hi im gonna be studying computer science at cartmel college as well, what do you think of the course and accomodation?

Hello, about a quarter of the computer science is programming, and the rest is looking at different aspects of the theory required to design computer systems. The programming is in C, which you get introduced to in the second week, and Java, which you get introduced to in the first week after the Christmas vacation. The teaching is divided into lectures and workshops. Most of the workshops take place at a computer lab. Your assessed work comes in the form of assignments which have to be completed by a certain time, which is frequently the time of your workshop. You do not have to hand in any physical work in Computer Science.
The accommodation is quite nice. The bedroom comes with a chair, a waste bin, and a mirror attached to the wardrobe, while the kitchen comes with fridges, a freezer, a cooker, a microwave, a kettle, a toaster, a vacuum cleaner, and an iron and ironing board. If you arrive on the first day, you will get introduced to your flatmates, and hopefully you will get to know them more if they go to the welcome week events. After that, you don't really interact with them other than seeing them in the hallways and kitchen, unless they invite you to their house parties.
