Making friends on your course, Academic Support, and Next Steps to Join DMU!

Hi everyone!

Most of you should be at the point where you have received all your final offers and now you are preparing to join DMU soon. The next few weeks can be nerve wrecking but a little preparation will go a long way in helping you avoid too much anxiety. Bare in mind that starting university, whether you are older or just barely 19 is a big step and it is completely normal to be a little nervous.

Here are a few things to help you prepare for the start of your academic year:

1.

Making friends: For some this is a little easier to do than it is for others, but on a campus with more than 10 000 students you will find your people. The best piece of advice to help you make friends is to attend Fresher’s week events because in this week most students are new and looking to meet people. In the meantime, you can join our Facebook page and talk to other students who will be joining us soon, this is especially helpful if you are moving into one of our accommodations. Make a post and try to locate some classmates or your flatmates.

2.

Preparations: you will start to notice that a lot of stores have different sales directed at university students, utilize these to shop for all the things you need. This can range from the IKEA Uni starter pack to stationary sales from TYPO. It will be helpful to have all you need to start the academic year from the 2nd of October because some lecturers will start teaching that first week and you will avoid panic buying last minute. This is common knowledge but get a bag, backpack, satchel, or anything to carry some stationary and a notepad. A laptop is a helpful but not necessary for some courses because you have 24 hour access to the library.

3.

Academic support: if you are a bit worried about the amount of support you will receive at DMU, you can breathe easy support is our middle name and we will help you. There are multiple learning centers set up for different reasons, the library has pop in sessions to assist with developing skills that are helpful to any course such as report writing and references. We also have specialized disability support if you have any learning disabilities , we aim to support you based on your academic support needs.

I hope this helps and Good luck for the year ahead !😁
