Why don't conservatives love Islam?

We live in a strange world. Most of the opposition to Islam comes from the conservative right, and often the Christian right, and meanwhile, most of the defense of Islam (aside from Muslims themselves) usually comes from the left. But concerning Christianity, it's the opposite way round.

Surely Islam is a godsend to most right-wingers. In a survey of 500 of British Muslims, not one of them said they thought homosexuality was morally acceptable. Only 3% thought sex before marriage was acceptable. Muslims are also often against abortion, recreational use of intoxicants, and pornography. I mean, the fact of the matter is that most Muslims are pretty morally conservative. I feel like the dislike of Muslims from the right-wing is purely chauvinistic. I think they also assume that Muslims = brown people, so I don't doubt that there's more than a little racism to it.

But this still leaves one big question. Why the hell do the left defend Islam? Do they really only defend Islam simply because conservatives oppose it? That to me just seems incredibly petty and stupid.

Whenever I hear right-wingers spouting on about how Islam isn't fit for this country because this is a 'Christian country', it makes me wince. Islam isn't fit for this country for exactly the same reasons Christianity isn't. Because it is an incredibly dated, dogmatic, xenophobic, misogynistic, homophobic, myopic, loony ideology which has no place in modern and progressive post-enlightenment society where we have ethics which are based on reason and rationality rather than paranoid fairy tails.

Yes, I've thought this before. Really though, I think it's just because of the religious difference. Conservatives in this country are more likely to be Christians, and thus don't think Islam is the "true religion".

I get that, but then that still doesn't explain why the left often defends Islam.
Because Islam still condemns them to hell doesn't it?
Islam is not comparable to conservative politics. I also believe there are a lot of conservatives who are homosexual themselves and many who have no problem with it. Unlike Islam which states that homosexuals should be stoned to death

Islam is simply brutal
UK conservatives are actually quite liberal so that makes sense. They might find some common ground with the US anti-abortionist, creationist gun-toting American conservatives.

This makes me sound incredibly ignorant but perhaps it's to do with the demographic that most Muslims are of ethnic minorities?

So what you're saying is that most conservatives are still pretty liberal compared to many Muslims, who are often on the very far-right.

If so, then why the hell are the left-wing often the first to defend Islam? That just makes no sense to me. Right-wingers don't like Islam because its too far-right, but then left-wingers will defend Islam just cos the right-wing don't like it.

That doesn't make sense.

I think most of the EDL are pretty far-right.

You are completely right. I have no idea why liberals are in bed with Islam either. It makes no sense to me either

That confuses me too, but maybe it's because Muslims are a "minority group" within the UK, and, stereotypically, defending the rights of minority groups is quite associated with the left.

Hmm, but Neo-Nazis and Scientologists are both minority groups but I don't see a huge amount of defense for them from the left.

Yeah, i would agree with you there.

Though i would add 'ethnic' in there because usually they are.

But then surely its a bit patronizing of the left to defend Muslims simply because of their ethnicity?

perhaps because members are mainly white and compared to the abrahamic religions, these ones are quite new?

I think you maybe right. But this seems silly to me. Skin colour of followers and the age of the ideology should not matter. These things shouldn't effect how much credence is given to it.

Yeah, it's pretty odd when you delve into the issue, i've always found it weird anyway since in my opinion islam doesn't really fit with democracy and our values and so on - unless they 'diluted' it like most Christians have these days seeing as raw Christianity doesn't fit either. But most muslims haven't progressed that far yet and are still very conservative.

Precisely. You pretty much said my exact thoughts on this issue.

I'm not allowed to give you any more rep, but you I agree with you 100%.

Well if they're receiving hostility on a daily basis I'm sure it's completely justified, I genuinely believe that this is the reason
