Why is channel 5 so obsessed about people on benefits?

Just about every time I switch over to Channel 5 there is some program against people on benefits. It's almost like a televised version of the Sun or Daily Mail. Pure gutter press reporting and lies.

They make it out that people on £50 a week JSA can afford luxury cruise holidays, sports cars and huge plasma screen TVs. And no person on unemployment benefits wants to work, and they get away with it.

They imply that nearly all disabled people are faking it to get disabled benefits, blue badges etc. These stupid TV shows would probably pay a performing Olympic athlete to say they get disabled benefit because of a broken back. These benefit program's are Troll shows. Designed to create prejustice. That all benefit claimants are cheats instead of the truth of it just being a tiny minority that cheat.

Of course the bigoted and gullible people in society including the Tory party, actually believe this garbage and so they complain to the government who have launched the most nasty benefit reforms in history. Job seekers lose 3 months benefit if they're a minute late to sign on. The disabled are tricked out of benefit by shoddy ATOS assessments even declaring people deaf, dumb, blind and limbless as fit to work! And to get a blue badge is almost impossible.

This is the reality! But of course C5 never shows the real story only the rare exceptions and probably stuff that's made up.

Not even lying, I forgot C5 existed...
People enjoy watching controversy, so the channel gets more viewers and a higher gross rating point & television rating point. Therefore the advertisement spot rates increase, and so does the ad revenue of the channel.

I suspect that's all it comes down to really.

Richard Desmond the owner of the Daily Express and Daily Star was a recent owner of Channel 5... that says it all!
Because it sells.

People love blaming others for the cause of their misfortunes, especially if it's someone in a different situation to them. C4 feeds on this hysteria and adds more fuel to the fire; why? Because £££

They obviously think it sells because it offends the values of the individuals who actually work and pay taxes to subsidise others. There's a general hostility in the UK to "scroungers", even among members of the working poor, who presumably have more contact than others with people on JSA.

I don't think that C5 cares about the wider perceptions it instils. It's out there to make money, and it can do that quite well by obsessing over benefit claimants.

True but it's when they start making things up and implying that the majority if not all are cheats. These shows have caused major damage to the reputations of all the poor and disabled.

Its because of these program's that poor and disabled people have been made homeless including a diabetic war veteran who starved to death after being sanctioned, all because of the nasty welfare reforms that have been a 'knee jerk' reaction to these benefit shows.

And as you said There is a general hostility to welfare claimants, these program's are almost guilty of inciting hate. They never show the other side of the coin. It's like British people who were renowned for their tolerance are being brainwashed into becoming hateful and resentful and I blame the rubbish on C5 and the gutter press for this.

I just hope when Labour wins the General election they will put an end to these nasty TV program's if not shut the channel down.

Idk what I prefer more those shows about people on benefits or tv shows about the Kardashians

its all propaganda, the majority dont live like that, the most extravagant people with loads of animals, expensive items etc always get picked. I suppose they want people to be against people living on benefits or on disability allowance. Loads of cuts have been made its awful, really unfair
Wasn't there also issues of the benefits streets stars claiming that they were unfairly represented afterwards? Goes to show I guess.

So it's a bit like a TV equivalent of a clickbait site using exaggerated/sensationalised news?

Pretty much. All about the £££.

There may be 'darker reasons' behind it too, such as trying to peddle an agenda. I don't want to delve too much into this idea though as it's purely conjecture.

a.k.a cancer

She's wears a burka when she's not wearing one in any of the pictures according to the daily mail and this part 'Her father who has lived here for 40 years does mot speak a word of English' is also so irrelevant.

Daily Mail's articles are so painful to read. At least focus on the main story. :facepalm2:

Easy question easy answer.

People like to watch scum on the tv and it's cheap to make.

They pick out the rarest cases to feed your scum needs and throw in the odd good person on it that's hard done by to protect them from exploitation comments that affected programs like benefits street

Because the main demographic who watch Channel 5 is likely to be easily outraged by it. Low income families who probably aren't eligible for benefits but probably resent those who do live off the state (and they probably know a fair few themselves).

A lot of their programming is trash but it's binge worthy trash. Stuff like Big Brother, Police Interceptors, lots of 'reality' TV, lots of American TV shows. In general it's not TV you would choose to watch, but if you live in a family where the TV is constantly switched on then you are inevitably going to be tuned into it from time to time.

Channel 5 is a business. It all comes down to money. They have an audience which they try to retain by appealing to their likes. More viewers = more they can charge to advertise on the channel.

I honestly think you need to get a grip on reality, not everything is a personal attack on the poor. The people who appear on programmes like Benefits Street aren't as stupid as they appear, most of them being benefited from future media deals. One of them even earned £100,000 for appearing on Celebrity Big Brother (although she now claims she is broke again...maybe she is that stupid!)

Oh and btw, Labour are never going to win an election with that clown in charge...

I laughed so hard when you bolded 'troll' in your post. Have you suddenly had an epiphany?

I suspect it simply gets viewers. Realistically a commercial television channel will show what gives a good return: the cheapness of production is one element, and the number of viewers another.
channel 5 is my favvvvvv :coma:

ppl in my demographic call it poverty porn like exploitation like my mum haaaates it but I just watch em because I understand the types of people on alllll those programmes

But it might have to do with who owns it/who mostly watches those channels

Like life on the dole, Proud, I cant even go through all of them but they're used as go-to references for conservatives and anti-benefits people and "why" the govvo needs to cut back. It stops becoming education about our welfare system and yes exploitation but that don't stop me watching it. I really just like to yell at the telly like. And what I see fumes me about this country and its mocking attitude about the working class so it keeps me going for what I wanna do. Boils my blood to see how sanctions and bedroom taxes are affecting more than people than me and my friends/family. As opposed to boiling my blood that they're on benefits :colonhash:

It's what keeps them alive
because watching people on benefits is like watching circus monkeys
there's a reason the vast majority of them are on benefits - because they're morons
and morons on tv are hilarious
