Socialism successes

Came back from my old university and spoke with current students whilst there.
Can someone please explain the appeal of socialism to me? I even chatted with the secretary of a student communist group and he had no answers to my questions.
Students can be naive but to blindly believe something with severe adverse end result is beyond me.
Are there any socialism success stories?

When students or people in general talk about socialism in a positive manner, the overwhelming majority are referring to countries such as those in Scandinavia, with high levels of public spending and world class public services. They are not longing for Stalinism or the more authoritarian versions of socialism.

You're writing on a website that cost you nothing but your internet connection (if you paid for that) to access.

You're kind of benefitting from socialism regardless of what your work ethic is. And, anyway, many people's work ethic is just a way of filling time/massaging their ego/establishing an ego that's pleasant enough to other people to feel accepted/trying to forget that they have no true friends etc.

None of us is intrinsically needed. But socialism kindly says "Yes, on our own we can be deemed meaningless (even if we, or a handful of other people, feel that ourself has great meaning) but, together, we can build the apparatus of meaning".
