The Student Room Group

Socialism successes

Came back from my old university and spoke with current students whilst there.
Can someone please explain the appeal of socialism to me? I even chatted with the secretary of a student communist group and he had no answers to my questions.
Students can be naive but to blindly believe something with severe adverse end result is beyond me.
Are there any socialism success stories?

I actually wrote a 4000 word essay on approximately this topic. It’s not great, I admit (I wrote it when I was naive), but it’ll do perhaps.

When students or people in general talk about socialism in a positive manner, the overwhelming majority are referring to countries such as those in Scandinavia, with high levels of public spending and world class public services. They are not longing for Stalinism or the more authoritarian versions of socialism.

Here’s the issue. A lot of them do not know anything about Scandinavia. They’re not socialists. The world economic freedom index which literally grades country on free market(capitalism) rated Iceland above USA and Denmark is only one point below USA, more capitalistic than Germany.
Scandinavians aren’t socialist and students need to be educated. https://www.heritage.org/index/ranking

Only just got notification which is weird. Essay link couldn’t be opened but I saw the table. I hope you know that the Scandinavian countries aren’t socialist?

The appeal >>>

Under socialism, workers are no longer exploited because they own the means of production. Profits are spread equitably among all workers according to their individual contribution.

The cooperative system also provides for those who can't work. It meets their basic needs for the good of the whole society.

The system eliminates poverty. It provides equal access to health care and education. No one is discriminated against.

Everyone works at what one is best at and what one enjoys. If society needs jobs to be done that no one wants, it offers higher compensation to make it worthwhile.

You're writing on a website that cost you nothing but your internet connection (if you paid for that) to access.

Yes, it has adverts so is a kind of business but it's also a KIND kind of business because it's cost you nothing financially.

You're kind of benefitting from socialism regardless of what your work ethic is. And, anyway, many people's work ethic is just a way of filling time/massaging their ego/establishing an ego that's pleasant enough to other people to feel accepted/trying to forget that they have no true friends etc.

None of us is intrinsically needed. But socialism kindly says "Yes, on our own we can be deemed meaningless (even if we, or a handful of other people, feel that ourself has great meaning) but, together, we can build the apparatus of meaning".

Users pay for "free" website access with their data. The Internet has amplified capitalism enormously.

Explain. Bear in mind that social policies are not socialism.

The same can be said of capitalism - which allows and encourages people to accumulate wealth and either use it for their own enjoyment (thus giving them the ilusion of meaningful existence) or for the benefit of others (which makes them intrinsically meaningful to others).
