welcome to capitalism.

Capitalism feeds more people than communism. The trouble with socialism is that you run out of other peoples money.

The business of 'charity' has ruined the prospect of the truly benevolent philanthropist.
Television adverts with people with 'caring' accents like the Irish and Tynesiders, carefully selected photos designed to tug at the heartstrings of women. It's subliminal advertising, nothing more, and seems like a cynical business, especially when you consider that the bosses of some of these charities will make a lot of money. Then there's the people who badger you at work for some 'fun run' that they are doing for some cause that you think that the government or National Lottery should already be putting funds in to- a cause that they probably already ARE putting funds in to.

If there were no charities and just a government appointed charities board with transparency about what they earn and how and no emotional blackmail it would be much better.

Sorry pal, whilst I realise that people are suffering I've got to disagree with you. I've just come back from 6 months in Uganda, children wandering the streets etc. But what you don't realise is that by giving them money or food, you're encouraging them to stay on the streets. It's a lot easier to just sit around all day and get free food and money isn't it? Hence why shops don't give left over food to the homeless.

Shops do give left over food to the homeless. Pret a Manger, for a start. A lot of their shops donate their left over sandwiches to local homeless hostels.

Oh and you think people stay on the streets to get free food? Take your head out of your arse.

People beg because they have nothing, if you keep giving them things, they'll stay there because it's a lot easier than trying to find a place to stay and building their life back up.

They become so dependant on the food they're being given they stop trying to get off the streets, because the streets give them guaranteed food.

I'll give you an example, a basic one so don't start getting picky, if your parents give you £200 a week for years on end, you probably wouldn't bother finding yourself a job. Why put effort in finding a job when you can get money for nothing? The same principle applies here, why put effort in trying to get off the street when you know you'll be fed anyway?

Please go and do some volunteering at your local homeless service. It may save you from going through life being a complete ****.

you can jog on pal, I spent 6 months in Uganda and this was exactly what was drilled into us every day, don't feed the beggars, don't feed the beggars. Maybe the situation over there is different but forgive me using my own experiences with the homeless.

So you been to school
For a year or two
And you know you've seen it all
In daddy's car
Thinkin' you'll go far
Back east your type don't crawl

Play ethnicky jazz
To parade your snazz
On your five grand stereo
Braggin' that you know
How the ******* feel cold
And the slums got so much soul

It's time to taste what you most fear
Right Guard will not help you here
Brace yourself, my dear:

It's a holiday in Cambodia
It's tough, kid, but it's life
It's a holiday in Cambodia
Don't forget to pack a wife

You're a star-belly sneech
You suck like a leach
You want everyone to act like you
Kiss ass while you bitch
So you can get rich
But your boss gets richer off you

Well you'll work harder
With a gun in your back
For a bowl of rice a day
Slave for soldiers
Till you starve
Then your head is skewered on a stake

Now you can go where people are one
Now you can go where they get things done
What you need, my son:.

Is a holiday in Cambodia
Where people dress in black
A holiday in Cambodia
Where you'll kiss ass or crack

Pol Pot, Pol Pot, Pol Pot, Pol Pot,

And it's a holiday in Cambodia
Where you'll do what you're told
A holiday in Cambodia
Where the slums got so much soul

It makes me sad that people think like this these days, even my own friends don't spare even 50p or £1 for a beggar, it's sickening. Even if I have a couple pound, I'll always try and help out with a little change that I have. What is money to people who are earning it every week? Oh and another thing people say (and in case any of you say it) is "why should I hand over my hard earned money, they should go get a job themselves" and that just makes me angry because people don't know their situation, but people criticise them for asking for a little help.

So I should give them my money just so that they can go into the corner shop and buy another beer?

Yes, why not? If someone is alcohol dependent, that beer may save their life.

I'm not sure it works quite like that...

It's the same as it has always been we're egoistic organisms, it's only to be expected.

For those who give to charity it is merely for their self-satisfaction induced by giving to charity.

I don't know why you got negged for this, it's a common stance on moral philosophy. Have some +rep to balance it out

People just ignore the less fortunate and go about their business. No one cares about the poor/dying people in the world, instead everyone just cares about their next mobile phone, or when they are going out next. When did society become so selfish? No one even has time to spare a few coins for the beggar on the street. Everyone is pessimistic towards homeless people, e.g. "oh he/she's probably going to end up buying drugs with the money" or "he/she isn't really homeless, they just have that dog there to make you feel guilty for them" etc.

It makes me sad that people think like this these days, even my own friends don't spare even 50p or £1 for a beggar, it's sickening. Even if I have a couple pound, I'll always try and help out with a little change that I have. What is money to people who are earning it every week? I hope put all my hard work into making a good fortune to be able to help out these people in a few years time. It just saddens me to see the homeless, dying, and malnourished in Europe, North/South America and Africa. I really hope people can wake up and realise their lives are amazing compared to these poor people. One more example of societies selfishness is a programme I was watching the other night, where these people were looking through bin bags outside of a food store and found 2 bin bags full up with brand new, still packaged food that was going to be thrown away. What about giving that food to the homeless beggars on street? Oh no! shop owners, management, councils (whoever is in charge) doesn't ever think of that!!

Anyway, what do you think of our society or/and attitude towards the less fortunate? Does it make you sad?

Hi mate dont you think your time could be better allocated targeting extremely wealthy individuals who in some parts of the world control up to 70% of money.

This is so true, I heard a story where ppl I know saw a homeless drunk guy having a fit, and because he looked a bit rough and hobo-ish people were just walking past and not even doing anything, eventually when they called an ambulance people stepped in and tried to help. No-one is willing to be the first one to step up anymore, people will just blend in with the crowd at the expense of another human being :frown:

This is the total fragmentation of society, egocentricity and selfishness !! People just going by and minding their own job, money etc etc

Young Britons now take the burden into their shoulders....!! None can go on in life alone...no-one, hope and common weal is the best thing we have we are saved by hope.
I am willing to help a poor person who has severely wounded his right leg and has cancer in that leg now.noone cares about him.when I try to help him, people criticize me and prevent me from helping him.😢😢
