Hi, I noticed there's no thread for Hatfield applicants. Anyone coming for 2007? I have an offer for English

Yay. I am currently here studying English, but I'll be gone by the time you start. You can be the new me

Well done and good luck with it all! Got any questions?

Im a potential Hatfielder. Applied for Economics and Politics. Would really love to go there, but room sharing is a bit of a concern for me.
I'm a current Hatfielder and because I'm on my year abroad you may even see me next year in college.

The best things about Hatfield for me is firstly that the college spirit is brilliant, we have a very diverse community from those who have to party every night to those who prefer a night in with a hot chocolate in front of the telly from sportsmen and sportswomen to musicians, from those who like to get actively involved to those who prefer to just enjoy being about college. I must stress that the above description does refer to all the Durham colleges but I wanted to include it for Hatfield because many people see rather negative views of us first off like that we're all very sporty(most detractors talk about rugby), being 'rah'(we're honestly no more rah than any other college in Durham and yes I'll get people disagreeing but it's my opinion!), being arrogant(again, personally I'm not arrogant about my college in general, and now I'm more arrogant about Durham when telling European friends which University I'm at than at trying to explain the collegiate system in Spanish!).

We're in a top central location with some lovely old buildings too, and yes the sound of the Cathedral bells can be at times a little startling but it's something I remember fondly! You can roll out of your bed into town or over to the DSU which is definitely a bonus if you've come back from Planet of Sound or Revolver and don't have that much of a walk.

We've got weekly(twice weekly in Michaelmas and the start of Epiphany Term) formals(some colleges don't get the chance to have weekly formals, but they do have bigger and more specialised ones than we do I've been to many Aidan's formals in the past and although they were very different from Hatfield ones they were amazing too. ) So I'm always up for going to more different college formals if anyone wants to invite me.....

As for the room sharing thing, on the whole from friends experiences they've enjoyed it because they've had an immediate friend to go to breakfast/lunch/dinner with and they've found out that they're not badly matched up either. If you don't get on with your roomate too, you can easily ask to be put into a different single room and there are always no problems with this. I was in a single room for my first year(yes although there is a large majority put in shared rooms, there are a significant number in single rooms too) which I wasn't expecting so it was a nice surprise, although I did envy some of my room sharing friends as they all tended to have really good friendships with their room-mates from day 1 and I hadn't had that 'instant friend'.

Hope that helps!

About how big are the shared rooms? Is there be enough room for 2 sinks/wardrobes/desks plus a bit of walking space or are they really cramped? xx

The shared rooms are a lot bigger than the single rooms I can tell you!! *I lived in the second smallest room in college last year(next door was the smallest) and had friends who had the biggest room in college-which was a shared.*

Normally there aren't two sinks but one shared one, they'll be two desks and two wardrobes too. Kathryn(durhamdosser) shared a three person room(which was a former tutor's flat, which had it's own bathroom, two bedrooms and a fridge/freezer) but you'll have to wait until she comments.(As invariably my memory will be wrong. )

In A and B stairs(the most recently renovated part of college) there are shared rooms with shared(between roommates) ensuite bathrooms with power showers and heated towel rails.

My friends room which was the biggest in college was Rectory 12 which had so much space you could fit at least twenty five people plus in there for a party(we only ever managed more than 10 mainly cos we didn't know that many people saddos are we.)

Hope that helps!
I live in A Stairs at the moment, and the rooms are lovely! Hatfield is great, like the others have said it has a really good spirit. I share a room, and did so last term but really didn't get on with the person I shared with. I'll be honest, it was hellish but lynne berry (the accommodation lady) sorted it out for us and this term I have moved downstairs, and share with another girl. We get on brilliantly, it is great, and she is my 'instant' friend lol. I do have other friends round college, and I do tend to eat/ go out with them, but I also eat with my roomie and we go out quite a bit together too. So all in all, sharing is good and when it is awful they do try hard to solve problems- they want you to be happy! Out of all the freshers this year there was us and one other pair that didn't get on, so the odds of you hating the other person are very small. :-)
