simplifying the expression (√2+y)(√2-y)
hi, can anyone give me an explanation of how id simplkify something like this? so far i have
= √2√2 +y√2 +y√2 -y
= 2+2y^2-y
but i dont know what to do next (assuming its right up to this point). thanks for any help
= √2√2 +y√2 +y√2 -y
= 2+2y^2-y

It is just a difference of two squares that looks a bit different because of the root2 at the start.
Remember (a-b)(a+b) is a^2 - b^2
Remember (a-b)(a+b) is a^2 - b^2

No, you haven't multiplied the brackets right. because the second bracket is root 2 MINUS y you should end up with. And of course it should be minus y squared at the end.
√2√2 +y√2 -y√2 -y^2
and so 2 - y^2
√2√2 +y√2 -y√2 -y^2
and so 2 - y^2
