It is just a difference of two squares that looks a bit different because of the root2 at the start.
Remember (a-b)(a+b) is a^2 - b^2

No, you haven't multiplied the brackets right. because the second bracket is root 2 MINUS y you should end up with. And of course it should be minus y squared at the end.

√2√2 +y√2 -y√2 -y^2

and so 2 - y^2
