I've done a lot of programming in Java and never came across anything which hasn't worked :s Have a look in Control Panel > Java, and make sure the proxy settings are correct (wwwcache.dur.ac.uk port 8080).

Assuming the program written in Java is loading and doing something but failing to connect to an external server:

1.) If it uses standard web page protocol you need to set the proxies
2.) If it uses its own protocol then with very few exceptions it is blocked by the university routers.

how do you set the proxies, and what does it mean?

it is normally under tools > connection settings in most programs :smile:
