java doesnt work on the lan

hi guys,
wondering if there are any techy people out there that can tell me what to do... java just doesnt seem to work on my computer despite it being installed. i went into the menu and put the lan settings to durham etc but still nothing. can anyone help :confused:

I've done a lot of programming in Java and never came across anything which hasn't worked :s Have a look in Control Panel > Java, and make sure the proxy settings are correct (wwwcache.dur.ac.uk port 8080).

Assuming the program written in Java is loading and doing something but failing to connect to an external server:

1.) If it uses standard web page protocol you need to set the proxies
2.) If it uses its own protocol then with very few exceptions it is blocked by the university routers.
