1.Roof slates are to be replaced by clay tiles making the loading on the roof timbers significantly greater. Weight of clay tiles approximately 2.5 times greater than slates and water absorption coefficient is greater.

2.The existing kitchen and adjoining small utility room are to be combined so as to produce a large kitchen. If the partition wall between the kitchen and utility room is load bearing what would result if no remedial action were to be taken. Briefly indicate any appropriate remedial action.

3.As part of the renovation a small balcony is to be constructed outside the main bedroom to the rear of the property on the first floor. Illustrate what type of structure the balcony would be.

•Consider the implications of such changes for the stability of the following structural elements Roofs, Walls, Floors and Foundations.

Think about the properties of the materials, and what effects the actions might make on the overall structure.

The new tiles are heavier, meaning there would be more strain on the walls to keep the roof up. The added water absorption means that it can take in more water, also making it heavier.

The partition wall is load bearing, meaning it is helping to keep the roof up. Removing it without remedial action could cause the roof to collapse.

Using the above method, see if you can solve the other questions
