Hess's law cycle help: Both combustion and formation

Hiya,
Im revising Hess's law and i need urgent help....
So whilst doing or attempting practice questions regarding hess's law for both combustion and formation, i always start the question thinking ill attempt it but i always get stuck at the following points.
So for both the Combustion and formation questions i never know what equation to write for the combustion products or the formation elements.
For the combustion products i know that its always something like; CO2 +H2O but now i need help...
so can anyone please explain to me how i can always get the write equation to then get full marks....
do i use the products or the reactants or do i use both...
Any help would be very much appreciated,,
