The auxilary equation is D^2 + 2D + 10 = 0. That has solutions

D
= (1/2)(-2 +- sqrt(4 - 40))
= -1 +- sqrt(-9)
= -1 +- 3i

Your general solution is correct. If you want the general solution in explicitly real form you can say

u(t) = e^(-t) [M sin(3t) + N cos(3t)]
hey jonny are u a maths graduate or undergraduate?
