Quantum Physics Energy Level

I thought the answer is 3 since electron can only de-excite to a lower energy level (here, -1.5, -3.4, -13.6). But the answer is 6. Can anyone please explain why?

So I think you're right in terms of de-exciting resulting in a lower energy level. There are 6 distinct ways however it can go to a lower energy level from -0.85eV which will cause a diffferent wavelength to be emitted:

1.

-0.85 to -1.50

2.

-0.85 to -3.40

3.

-0.85 to -13.6

4.

-1.50 to -3.40

5.

-1.50 to -13.6

6.

-3.40 to -13.6

Hope that helps
