Contact force

When working out contact force is it the reaction force + friction force? And why do you square them like Pythagoras?

Bit of a vague question. Presumably the reaction force acts perpendicular to the surface whereas friction force acts parallel to the surface. These are two perpendicular directions with a right-angle between them. So their resultant force would be the hypotenuse of the right-triangle they create.
