This suddenly changes as the writer states there was "a sickening smell of warm humanity" The olfactory imagery suggests how awful her bus journey home must have been. This parallels the begging of the extract : the jewellery shops were "fairy palaces" as she started off trying to see the good in things and automatically gives up.
