Graduate Entry Medicine

Hi,

I've had a recent change of heart and have decided I want to study medicine (the story is longer than this!!), I'm starting to realise that September is the wrong time to want to apply for 2024, I think I'm too late, especially without any of the pre-med exams required.

What are my best options? Or do I need to wait for 2025 intake and take the time to prepare for pre-exams/build a portfolio of my dedication to healthcare?

Any advice is very welcome! Thank you, Molly

Yes 2025 intake - you can do the UCAT or GAMSAT, or both. However, for Cambridge, you can apply for 2024

Surprised Cambridge has no entrance exam - it is the only graduate medicine one without out

‘Work experience

To develop understanding of what a career in Medicine involves and your suitability for your intended profession, you are strongly advised (though not required) to undertake some relevant work experience, either paid or voluntary, in a health or social care organisation. We are not prescriptive about how this is obtained, recognising the widely differing opportunities available’

You could give Cambridge a shot

‘When is the GAMSAT?

The GAMSAT is offered twice a year. In 2023, the test periods are 18-22 March and 8-12 September. The GAMSAT must be sat in one of the allocated test centres in person. The March sitting has more test centres in Australia but fewer test centres in the UK compared to the September sitting.’

‘How long are the results valid?

GAMSAT results are valid for 2 years. This means that if you took your GAMSAT in 2022, your results could be used for 2023 entry and 2024 entry.’

‘I have more than one valid GAMSAT score, which one can I use?

You can use any valid GAMSAT score from any sitting. This means that if you sat the GAMSAT in September 2021, March 2022 and in September 2022 you can use any of those results for admissions in 2023.

This means you can use your best GAMSAT score, unlike the UCAT, which is valid for one year (for that academic year only)

Register for the March 2024 GAMSAT -registration will open around November 2023

wow, thank you! My next question is can I apply for med school before I take the GAMSAT? My understanding is that you can't but it would be ideal if i could take my GAMSAAT in March after applying now for a sept 2024 intake..?

‘Admission tests

There is no requirement for applicants to the Graduate Course in Medicine (A101) to complete an admissions test. You must take the Biomedical Admission Test (BMAT) if you want to apply to both the Standard Course (A100) and the Graduate Course (A101).’

You are applying for only A101

Hi Molly, There is still time to register for the UCAT and you could apply to UCAT universities as well as Cambridge. You have up until 22nd September to register for the UCAT so if interested I would start preparing as soon as possible.

Also the GAMSAT exam has to be taken prior to applying although unlike the UCAT you can sit the GAMSAT twice in a year during its March and September settings. The GAMSAT scores are also valid for 2 years i.e., if you say the GAMSAT in September of 2023 you would be able to use the score from this exam for 2024 and 2025 entry. Only issue is GAMSAT registration closes atleast two months in advance of sittings so it will not be possible to sit the Seotember GAMSAT however you could wait for registration. to open for the March GAMSAT and then use the score for 2025 entry!
