There are still loads of options open to ACAPS (Applied Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences) students at LJMU:
1) If you actually do some work in your first year and get over 60/70% you will be able to transfer from ACAPS to Pharmacy. Because level 1 ACAPS is very similar to level 1 MPharm (all but one module) the transfers go straight into level 2 MPharm, though do have to do level 1 Pharmacy Practice at the same time as all the level 2 MPharm modules. Its not too hard to get over 70%, i did it with only a bit of revision put in. You'll find a lot of the stuff was covered at A-level, but with some expansion on some areas.
2) Say you don't get into Pharmacy on the original transfer - yet you still really really want to do pharmacy? If you get a 2.1 in your final ACAPS degree you can do the direct entry route onto the MPharm, and bypass level 1 as above. Yes this means you will be at uni for 6 years but that might not matter to someone who really wants to do pharmacy.
3) If you actually enjoy ACAPS and go off the idea of doing pharmacy then you still have loads of opportunities. LJMU gives its ACAPS students the option of taking a year out in industry. Not many people do it and it really makes the ones that do stand out. Last years graduates only had one person who did that and he is no doing a research project at the uni over the summer and is spoken very highly of within than company - to the point were they would take him back. LJMU also offers these summer research projects to its undergrad students (i am doing this) and they are excellent experience of the accademic and commercial world of research - again, not many people do these so it looks great on your CV. Finally, the ACAPS course at LJMU allows you to specialise in a certain area of Pharm Sciences. This makes you more employable because industry like people who have a defined area of expertise, and this can actually make ACAPS graduates more employable than Pharmacy graduates for a lot of jobs. . . even though the industry is saying it is crying out for pharmacists! What a crazy world we live in, heh.
Anyway. I hope this doesn't sound like an angry rant because it wasn't meant to be in any way. If people do end up doing ACAPS at LJMU, or at another uni with a similar course, then do not feel like a failure because you didn't get onto pharmacy. Even if you don't end up doing pharmacy at a later date, it isn't the end of the world by any means. If you're still unsure... read this post again!
