Leeds Accommodation 2012 Thread

apparently you need to apply for accomodation as soon as possible

No - as long as you apply before the deadline (July 1), you are guaranteed accommodation and you have the same chance of getting your preference as everyone else.

About being close - the closer halls are more expensive than those further away (like for like) so if your main problem is that you don't want to have to buy a £100 bus pass, you'll probably be paying far more for a close hall than a not-so-close hall.

Does anyone know anything about North Hill Court? I know you can use James Bailie Park's facilities and it's really cheap so I was looking at that but nobody's said anything about it...

Was also looking at Clarence Dock but after hearing complaints about silverfish I'm not keen... do not like insects! :colondollar:
I've just started looking into accomodation.... wondering about Clarence Dock? Know its a bit further away and really keen to meet new people, be quite sociable so wouldn't want to immediately take myself out of that, but it looks really nice and cheaper ensuites/city centre location?

Also, quick question to anyone that's applied for their accommodation already; do you get to specify which room you want exactly? Like in North Hill Court and James Bailie Park - there are some rooms with double and some with single beds. When you go to apply, does it give you the option to specify which kind you'd like?

I can't firm Leeds yet because I haven't heard back from Teesside :colondollar:

No you don't but there is a free text box (other factors) where you can put anything you want so you can specify if you would prefer a single or a double. However, do bear in mind that it may not be possible for us to meet that preference.

Ah, thank you!

I've got a couple more questions to anyone who may know, too;

-Do you apply for one block only? Like, my friend at Birmingham had to pick 1st, 2nd and 3rd choices I think... is Leeds the same?
-Do you have a lounge area in the North Hill Court flats, and in Clarence Dock? All I've found is pictures of the bedrooms and kitchens...

Just about to ask the same question, How many accommodation can we pick?

I've applied for University of Birmingham accommodation and had to pick my 1st choice down to my 6th choice. I'm guessing Leeds will be less because they have less accommodation though.

Hi!
So I got accepted into Leeds University and I've been looking at accommodation. Basically I'm torn between Devonshire Hall and Charles Morris Hall. :/ I'm going for catered en-suite (hopefully!) but both halls have pros and cons.

Devonshire Hall has amazing facilities and organises its own social events and even has its own student newspaper, but is located 1/2 a mile to a mile north of the campus. It's not far (15-20 mins walk), I just don't know if the extra distance from campus would be a bit annoying if I were late for something or coming back late in the evening (early morning... :P)

On the other hand, I like the look of the kitchens more in Charles Morris Hall (even though its catered) and it has more modern bedrooms/en-suites, but no facilities.
Also, Charles Morris is on campus, near the student union and all that, so very convenient.

Argh, they're both look really great, it's hard to choose!! I'm happy to have this choice, but I still have to make it. If anyone who's stayed in these halls/gone to Leeds to help me out a bit, I'd really really appreciate it!!

OMG SAME! I don't know what to choose between Charles morris and Devonshire hall Charles morris looks better but seems a bit quite :l
Devonshire isn't on campus which is a pain :l

No lounges in Clarence Dock unfortunately. There is a bar though which is a bit like a common room for the whole of CD but flats only have bedrooms and kitchens.

I like The Tannery!!

Good shout

Regarding Leodis, don't live there but been there for a few pre drinks, literally 5-7mins walk to parkinson, it's 10mins to town max which is roughly where all the clubs are, Halo is right next to parkinson which is pretty big. The union is close by which has it's own shop but bit more expensive, convenience on the way up which is 3mins-ish away but the road is very steep for a few minutes going into uni. It's also a bit rough an area but leodis itself has a gate/fence.

I'm thinking James Baillie because my sister went there and she said it was really good, but that was about 3/4 years ago now. I really really do not want a quiet halls. I want a halls that's really social and going to make a great first year as my friend had a quiet halls at uni and she found it so hard to socialise and make friends as everyone just kept themselves to themselves. Soooo, any ideas?

who knows which choice of accomodation is the best for international students? what im looking for is ensuite bathrooms and close to the campus, either on campus or about a 10-15 minute walk. thx in advance

Hey, don't know if you've already had your question answered, but I'm a first year student and live in The Tannery. I can honestly say I have no complaints at all, met some amazing people, and the location is pretty perfect, 10 minutes to the city centre and 10-15 minutes to the Uni, depending on where you are on campus.

In relation to which accommodation is more suitable for international students, The Tannery has a large population of internationals, I myself live with 3 international students, in a flat of 5 people, and there are many of my friends that know or live with international students too. However, directly opposite The Tannery there is Sentinel Towers which is similar to The Tannery but I visited it last year and it seems to be dedicated to more international and mature students, although I preferred The Tannery in terms of room sizes and overall feel.

The Tannery has en-suite, which is very convenient and personal. The flats are shared between 5, and the rooms all have double beds. It has everything you could possibly need and the facilities are great. Hope this helped!
Hi! I'm going to apply for a room but I have a lot of question I didn't find an answer to on the website. I know they may look silly to you, but I'd be an Erasmus student so I have no idea of how accommodation is in the UK.

-Is it possible to lock my own bedroom? Is there a key for it or only a key for the whole "apartment"?

-Are there only single room? How many students is a room with a double bed assigned to? One or two?

-If I am in a residence hall with IPTV included it means I don't have to pay anything more, right?
While, if I stay, for example at The Tannery (no IPTV), how much do I have to pay to get IPTV?

-Who have to clean shared bathrooms and kitchens? The students living there?

Thank you in advance

I have only been in so many accom places, but let's see:

- You can lock your own room. I have two keys: one for the front door and one for my personal room. Most of the time the front door is an automatic thing that isn't a real key key but a card or other electronic device. I think this is true for all accommodation.
- There is always only one person in a room. Even if you have a double bed, then you're just lucky to have a big bed, your room is still your room.
- I know nothing about TV, sorry
- The bathrooms and kitchens in my residence are cleaned every so often by a cleaning person, the bathrooms every week, the kitchen every semester. They do take out the trash but we're expected to keep the kitchen clean ourselves. Then when it was christmas break they did a very thorough cleaning, and I think they do it at the start and end of term, as well. Easy enough!

Hope that helps! :]

If you access IPTV i.e. live television through your laptop/PC, then the law says that you would need a television licence. If you were a UK student whose parents had a TV licence at their family home, you wouldn't need a licence if you were only using your laptop on a battery (i.e. not plugged into the mains) but as a non-UK student, you would have to get one if you use IPTV so probably better to rely on BBCiPlayer and the other non-live sources.
The Tannery has a TV in the common room so you could always watch live TV there.

Yes, I think this is the thread I was looking for!

I have received a conditional offer from university of leeds (Msc. infection and Immunity) for Sept. 2012 and would like to know about accommodation on campus? I was looking at Charles Morris Hall (cuz, i am not too good at cooking) ... I believe that's the only option I have, being an International PG student?

Thanks!
I've received a condition for Graphics at Leeds and I was hoping to get a room and Clarence Dock but hearing these stories about silverfish, mould and bad buses (I hate buses due to the ones where I live anyway...) have made me think otherwise.
Is there any other good accommodation close to the city which is also a short walk from the uni?

thanks for the information, u were of great help
Stuck between Bodington (love the fact that it's a biiiig hall, hate the fact that it's so far away from campus), Devonshire and James Baille.
Who has actually started applying? What is the actual application like?
