Thank you hana&feather and revill90.

A school has already got back to me and said they are happy for me to observe! Yay! What should I be looking out for when observing? Are there particular questions I should ask? What am I likely to face during interview?!

I would think about the teaching strategies the teacher used, format of the lesson (starter, main, plenary?), how behaviour is being managed, have students of different abibilities shown progress over the period, good practices and what not seem to work, etc. Also ask the class teacher if you can help in any way (like 1:1 or small group support). If you can, ask to see a lesson plan/ schedule of work. (some providers ask you to help micro-teach or present a lesson plan - so this will help). The teachers themselves would have gone through the process, so ask them for tips when they are free, they may know the local providers! (one of my fellow mentor managed to get insight on what her two providers like from the Head of Dept - one is more towards a kinesthetic delivery, one is more philosophical etc.)

Now I need to get an extra week before the summer holiday as part of my pre-course assignment! Trying to see if I can get into a different school to the one I'm volunteering in to broaden the experience...
Hi all,

I have an interview soon and was wondering if anyone could help. I have to give a 20 minute teaching activity on "Going Places" with Year 2 pupils. Does anyone have any suggestions on making it interactive etc?
How about a 'Barnaby Bear' type of activity - having a suitcase of items from a particular country and pretending that Barnaby Bear has just come back from there? Have items that they could touch, explore and then write about?
Hi all,

I have to admit that I'm feeling a little demotivated about teaching at the moment. Three out of three rejections! I really didn't expect much (as I had next to no experience), but it is always disheartening to get rejected. Anyway, I've found a TA position since and am re-applying through Extra. Has that ever worked for anybody for the PGCE? I assumed everywhere would be full by now!
Hi Cathrela,

I had 3 out of 3 rejections last year, down to a lack of experience within a Primary (I had 5 years experience in Early Years). My boss was kind enough (I am manager of the setting) to give me one day off a week to gain experience in a Primary School, which I am in no doubt helped me to gain a place on the PGCE for this year. It is disheartening, I know how you feel, but I would advise that you keep your head held high, go and get some experience and make the most of that experience.

That's the plan if it comes to it (another year as a TA, perhaps in a different year group). Thanks for sharing, that gives me some hope.
Hi Cathrela

I had to apply this year through apply 2, I gained an interview and a place. This was due to no experience in primary previously but I def would not wait another year I would apply in apply 2 now and hope that your experience u are gaining now will support your application. Make sure u send the uni admissions team an updated work experience account, otherwise they will go on what u originally wrote in your application.

I got my degree July 14' and have gained experience this year and a place to start in sept so it's doable

If it doesn't work out this year it will next, fingers crossed for you
Good luck

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I emailed the admissions department of my Extra choice to let them know, and I now have an interview

I hope there's still places left as I've fallen in love with the University, course and town!
That's great news:smile:

What uni have u applied to?

Winchester

Where are you doing your PGCE?

I don't actually have my degree until July (graduation). I'm a mature student and I've just finished my degree (working as a TA part time).

Hi if you are passionate about teaching and it is what you want to do, never give up. I have just accepted a conditional offer last week, it was my 6th interview.

hiya i am doing it through John Taylor High School, they have primary schools in the consortium. There are a few schools which offer school direct through Derby. If you go onto Derby Uni website and type in pgce primary in the course search bar, the option for school direct is there if you go onto how to apply, the schools are there. You have to apply to the school via ucas
Hey everyone, I hope you're all well.
I've just joined the PGCE bandwagon here and have accepted an offer to do secondary PGCE maths at Southampton. Is there anyone in a similar situation location/subject-wise, I'd like to hear about it!

Hi

I have applied to do a PGCE primary in math specialism , I have interviews coming up in both Liverpool John Moores and Edge Hill University. Has anyone else had an interview for these course already and can offer advice on the presentation part of the interview? Or any advice in general.

Thanks in advance.

Hi, I interviewed at Edge Hill for the primary maths specialism PGCE in March and got a place! Don't worry about the presentation part of the interview, it was more like an informal chat! I was sat with the one interviewer and just talked through my object (I decided to bring a measuring jug - volume and capacity). I just made sure to talk about the object in depth and about all the different things the children would be learning beyond just volume and capacity (like how to read a scale), I also made sure to relate it back to real life, and I talked about what questions I'd ask the children and how I'd differentiate for different age groups. So whatever book/object you choose - be passionate and in depth! The whole process at Edge Hill was really relaxing (as much as an interview can be!) and everyone was very friendly! If you want any more info, just let me know! Good luck xx
